Frequently Asked Questions
What are the hours of the SSS Program?
The office hours for the Lab school are 8-5 during the Fall
and Spring semesters. During summer, the hours are 7-3:30. There is
not a Reading/Writing Coordinator or Peer Mentor available during
summer, but the counselor is available and the computer lab is open
for use.
Is SSS open year round?
Currently, SSS is available during the Fall and Spring
semesters, and we have summer hours during the summer sessions.
However, the services are limited. The program director and the
counselor are available; the Reading/Writing Coordinator and peer
mentor are only available for the Fall and Spring.
How many times am I required to meet with the
SSS counselor?
In order to remain eligible for services provided by SSS, you
are required to meet with your SSS counselor a minimum of two times
each semester.
Once I am admitted into the SSS program, how
long am I a member?
As long as you continue to fulfill your responsibilities to
the program, you will be a member in the SSS program until you
graduate unless you decide you no longer wish to participate. If
you decide to exit the program, you will have an exit interview
with the SSS staff.
How many computers does SSS have available for
students?
There are six computers available in the SSS computer lab
that are strictly for those students who are enrolled in SSS.
What does SSS offer that other tutorials don't
offer?
All tutorials are geared to meet the needs of their students.
Here at SSS, the staff is "student friendly". Our ultimate goal is
to help you get a head start on your college career. SSS students
not only come to us for assistance with their course work but to
"feel a part of". There are opportunities to meet one-on-one with
any staff member. Many of the students in SSS are from other
similar backgrounds and programs and therefore have a built in
connection to their new "college life".
Is everyone required to take the Reading and
Writing courses?
No, the Reading and Writing courses are not mandatory for
every SSS participant. Only freshmen are required to complete the
Reading and Writing courses, however, we strongly recommend that
every student take the courses as they are extremely helpful.
Does being an active participant in the SSS
program guarantee I will get Grant Aid?
No, simply being a member in the program does not entitle you
to Grant Aid. You must complete the requirements within the program
in order to receive funds.
Do I have to sign-up to attend SSS
workshops?
You do not have to sign-up for the workshops that are
provided by the SSS peer mentor, as
they are only for SSS students, you can just show up. If,
however, you need to complete a workshop outside of the regularly
scheduled time, you must make an appointment with the peer mentor.
Keep in mind, you do have to sign-up if you wish to attend the
workshops held through the Learning Resource Center as those are
open to all students.
Do I have to be a full-time student to
participate in the SSS program?
No, you do not have to be a full-time student to be a member
for the SSS program. However, in order to be eligible and receive
Grant Aid you must maintain a full unit load (12 units or more
during the semester).
