What is the ELM/EPT
The California State University requires you to take the EPT and/or the ELM after admission and PRIOR to enrollment in a California State University unless you are exempt by means of scores earned on other appropriate tests such as the SAT and ACT.
The EPT and ELM are not admission tests; instead, they determine placement in specific courses. If you are required to take the EPT/ELM, you must do so before you can register. Students who need remediation are required to complete their remedial course(s) by the end of the first year of enrollment.

Where to take the tests
You may take the tests at the California State University campus where you will enroll or a CSU campus near you. There are many testing dates to choose from.

Test format
The EPT contains the following three sections:
- Essay: 45 minutes-one assigned topic;
- Reading Skills: 30 minutes - 45 multiple choice questions
- Composing Skills: 30 minutes - 45 multiple choice questions
The ELM consists of one section: 50 multiple choice questions to be completed in 90 minutes.

I live out-of-state. How can I take the test?
If you live outside of the state of California, have been admitted to a CSU campus, and need to take the EPT and/or the ELM before arriving in California, please call 1-925-808-2142 or e-mail csuout-of-state@ets.org. Out of state testing is arranged for the 2nd week of the month, except in May when the test is the first week. There is an additional fee of $50 for testing outside of the state of California.
