Second-Semester Freshman Mandatory Advising!

If you are new full-time freshman in fall 2012, you must see an advisor in your second semester (or before) so that you can register for your third semester's classes (in fall 2013). If not, there will be a registration hold on your account. Be proactive! See your advisor early in your second semester (spring 2013) and ask him or her to clear your hold so you can register in April for your fall classes.

1. Make a reservation to attend DOG DAYS : New Student Orientation at Fresno State

* All new undergraduate students are expected to attend DOG DAYS. This is your opportunity to meet with an academic counselor, familiarize yourself with campus services and involvement opportunities, get assistance with on-line class registration.

In order to register for classes at DOG DAYS all freshmen must have their ELM and EPT scores reported to Fresno State prior to their DOG DAY.

2. Register to take the Entry Level Math Exam and the English Placement Test (ELM/EPT)

*Unless you are exempt from having to take the ELM and EPT, you will need to register to take these exams during your senior year of high school. The results of these exams must be mailed to Fresno State before you will be allowed to register for your first semester at Fresno State. 3. Understand your ELM Scores

A passing score for the ELM is defined as a minimum score of 50. If you do not score a 50 or above, you must fulfill remediation requirements within your first two semesters at Fresno State as specified below:

  1. Students who score between 32 and 48, they must successfully complete Math 4R before taking the General Education Quantitative Reasoning (B4) requirement.  Math 4R is a one semester remedial Intermediate Algebra course.
  2. Students who score a 30 or below are highly encouraged to take Math 1RA and Math 1RB before taking the General Education Quantitative Reasoning (B4) requirement.

4. Understand your English Directed Self-Placement Options

Visit the English Department Directed Self-Placement Website for more details.

5. Join the Mentoring Institute

Each year, members of the Fresno State faculty serve as mentors to students. These mentors provide guidance, friendship, and support and serve as role models for students. The mentors come from a wide range of academic disciplines, including faculty and staff from the eight colleges and schools and various student support organizations and programs.

6. Register to take University 1

University 1 is a 3-unit course designed to guide students through the academic process and to help ensure their success. The course lays a cornerstone for higher education and advanced study, and helps develop skills for lifelong learning and achievement.

8. Meet with your advisor each semester

* It is imperative that you meet with you major advisor or special program advisor each semester to determine if you are enrolled in the appropriate courses. Advisors will keep you abreast of remediation policies, recommended courses in sequence, verify course load, and explain which major courses are only offered in certain semesters. We recommend that you see your advisor at lease once a semester prior to registration of the following semester. Be sure to take advantage of the Tips for First-Year Student Success .
