Confidentiality

Your privacy is our foremost concern.

Unless specifically required by law or court order, we do not release private medical information without the consent of the student/patient. Medical and psychological records are stored independently and are entirely separate from your academic records.

Except for the Student Health Center staff, no member of the University faculty, administration or staff may see your medical or psychological record. Parents may not see your record or obtain information about your medical or psychological condition without your written consent (see exceptions below).

Parents of a student who is less than 18 years of age (a legal minor) are notified when a student is seriously ill.

State Law requires medical providers to report certain conditions such as injury due to violent assault, loss of consciousness, public health diseases and being a danger to self or others. Furthermore, under the Title IX Educational Amendments of 1972 and the California State University's Executive Order 1074, any University employee who becomes aware that a possible act of illegal discrimination, harassment or retaliation—including an act of sexual violence—has occurred against a Fresno State student is obligated to report such information to appropriate University authorities. The Psychological Services Counselors are the only ones exempt from these reporting obligations.
