National Student Employee Week

April 13 - 17, 2020

Fresno State supports the employment of its students. Working on campus can serve to offset a portion of tuition costs, and also provide a practical and enriching experience. Studies show that students who work on campus 1-20 hours per week have a higher average GPA than their nonworking peers, and have increased enrollment retention and graduation rates. On-Campus student employment also provides students with:

  • A central location in which to look for on-campus student employment opportunities
  • An opportunity to gain career readiness skills and experiences that are relevant to future professional goals
  • A connection to the campus family with engaged supervisors interested in preparing our student employees for their professional future

The Career Development Center manages part-time on-campus student employment for Fresno State students through HireFresnoState. There are two types of on-campus student employment:

  • Student Assistant: Students are employed by various offices on campus and work up to a maximum of 20 hours per week.
  • Federal Work-Study (FWS): Federal financial aid awarded to students. Students are employed by various offices on campus and wages are drawn against their work-study award. For more information on applying for a federal work-study award, please contact the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office at 559.278.2182.

Eligibility: Must be a matriculated student, admitted to the university, and registered for at least 6 units with fees paid.

Supervisors/Timekeepers

Supervisors play an important role in mentoring our student employees at Fresno State. This page is intended to serve supervisors as a central location for resources and helpful tips for your student employee(s).

Steps for Hiring Your Student Employee

1. Create a Job Description that gives a clear picture of what the student employee will be doing. Be sure to include the learning outcomes and career readiness skills they are gaining by doing the job. Included are tips for writing a good job description.

* Fresno State is committed to nondiscrimination and non-harassment in accordance with Federal, State and CSU Policy. For more information and assistance contact The Human Resources Office at 559.278.2032*

2. Post your job description on HireFresnoState. First time users will need to set up a profile in HireFresnoState. Remember that HireFresnoState is NOT linked to Peoplesoft, so you will always be required to use your full email address when logging in i.e. @csufresno.edu/mail.fresnostate.edu, and the password used when created your profile will never change.

3. Determine ahead of time what you are looking for when hiring your student employee. This will be very helpful when developing your interview questions. Here are some sample questions and helpful tips depending on what you want to know.

4. Once you have selected who you wish to hire, you will need to hire your student employee in Peoplesoft at least 1 week prior to their start date. Once they are hired in Peoplesoft, the Student Employee will receive an email from Human Resources asking them to bring in the appropriate documents and to fill out the necessary paperwork. This must be done no later than 3 days prior to their start date.

*As a courtesy to those applicants who were not selected, you are strongly encouraged to send them an email thanking them for their interest in your position and encourage them to continue applying for other campus positions.

Onboarding Process for New Hires

Appropriate training for your new student employee is crucial to starting them off with a solid foundation to be successful. Be sure to set expectations such as dress code, punctuality, professionalism, personal cellphone usage, as well as office phone and in-person etiquette.  (See Customer Service Skills Training under Helpful Forms and Links). Create a training manual, if one does not exist, and have the student employee add to it as they come across situations or scenarios.

Also, as part of the onboarding process student employees will receive email notifications when they are hired in the system to complete the following mandated trainings through CSULearn.

  • Onboarding Training Introduction
  • Sexual Misconduct Training
