ENGLISH PLACEMENT TEST (EPT)

A passing score at Fresno State for the EPT is defined as a minimum total score of 147. If students score below 147, they must must complete one of the following courses by the end of their second semester at Fresno State--English 5A or English 10 or Linguistics 6--and pass that course with a C grade of better.

Why do students have to take the English Placement Test (EPT)?
It is a legal requirement of the State of California. Executive Order No. 665 was issued pursuant to Title 5, California Code of Regulations of the Board of Trustees of the California State University system.

Where do students go to register for the EPT exam?
Students can register for the EPT exam through the Office of Testing Services, Family Food Science Building, Room 110, 278-2457. On-line registration is also available at http://www.fresnostate.edu/testing .

How much does it cost to take the EPT?
An $18 fee is required for the just the EPT exam. Students who plan to take both the EPT and the ELM will be required to pay $36 total for both exams. Students need to bring a check or money order (ONLY) made out to "ETS" on the day of the test.

How can students be exempted from the EPT?
Students may be exempt on the basis of ACT or SAT scores or by satisfactory performance on an Advanced Placement (AP) or college course that satisfies the GE requirements for English. See the EPT Exemptions box on the chart above for details.

What is a passing score for the EPT? 
The minimum passing score is 147 (per the CSU coded memoradum of August 16, 2010).

Can students retake the EPT if they do not earn a passing score?
No, the EPT may only be taken one time.

What happens if students do not pass the EPT?
If students score below 147, they must must satisfy English remediation by the end of their second semester at Fresno State--English 5A or English 10 or Linguistics 6--and pass one of these courses with a grade of C or better.

What happens if students do not fulfill the remediation requirement?
If the remediation is not completed within the first two semesters, students will not be allowed to register the following semester. Remediation will need to be completed at another institution, such as a California Community College, before the registration hold will be lifted.

Can students register for classes without taking the EPT?
All students must have taken the EPT (and the score received at Fresno State), or be exempted from the EPT, before they can register for classes.

If students take the placement exams for English at a community college, are they exempt them from having to take the EPT?
No. All CSU students must take the EPT unless they have submitted transcripts verifying the completion of the General Education requirements for English.

How long will it take for students to get EPT results?
Usually results are mailed to students approximately 4 weeks after the test date. (The address used is the one given by the students on the day of the exam.)

Do students need to take the EPT if they have less than 60 transferable units and have not yet fulfilled the A2 English requirement, but have completed a remedial level English (e.g., college writing skills course) at a community college? 
A remedial English course taken at a community college will transfer to meet the remediation requirement at Fresno State and the student will not have to take the EPT. However, the Remediation Office, Joyal Administration Building, Room 106, will need to verify that the course taken will exempt the student from taking the EPT before the registration hold can be lifted.

Do transfer students from institutions other than a CSU, UC or CCC need to take the EPT if they have completed General Education English at that institution?
Yes, students will need to take the EPT unless they are exempted. Records must verify that the course taken will exempt the student from the EPT. Once verified, taking the EPT is not needed. Refer students to the Remediation Office, Joyal Administration Building, Room 106, to verify that the course completed will provide EPT exemption before the registration hold can be lifted.
