How do I become a secondary social science/history teacher?
The state of California requires teachers earn a teaching credential in Social Science/History in order to teach those subjects in a secondary school (7th – 12th grade).
To obtain a social science teaching credential at Fresno State, students must first complete the following prerequisites BEFORE being admitted to the Credential Program.
Prerequisites
1) Bachelor's degree (recommended in history, political science, geography, or economics)
2) EHD 50: Introduction to Teaching (3 units), Equivalent Course, OR Pre-Program Experience Waiver
3) CI 149: Curriculum, Instruction, and Technology (3 units)
4) Take and pass the California Educator Credentialing Examination (CBEST)
5) Subject Matter Competency (Choose one of the following two options)
OPTION A – Take and Pass the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET: Social Science)
OR
OPTION B – Complete the required coursework: Social Science Subject Matter Competency Plan
