The Investiture Ceremony

California State University, Fresno welcomes its friends, guests, faculty, staff and students to the Investiture of Joseph I. Castro, as the eighth president in the university’s history. The occasion is one that both celebrates the university’s achievements and endeavors, and authenticates the president’s role as leader of this academic community.

The investiture historically has been a formal installation into office or estate by a superior authority. In medieval Europe it defined the feudal relationship between suzerain and vassal; the suzerain received the homage and oath of the vassal and invested him with a piece of turf, a banner or branch, symbolic of the authority conferred on him. As time passed, investitures extended to ceremonies conferring ecclesiastical authority. Sword, scepter, ring, crosier–all become symbols of investiture.

Universities, too, have traditionally recognized the installation of their presidents with formal inaugurations and investitures. Today, Timothy P. White, chancellor of the 23-campus California State University, together with several members of the system’s Board of Trustees, confers upon Dr. Joseph I. Castro the presidential medal as a symbol of his responsibility and authority.

We celebrate another beginning in the history of the university, and we encourage each university member and each guest to enjoy the hospitality of the campus on this historic day. Please make yourselves at home during this special observance.
