COVID-19 Updates

Campus Preparedness

Fresno State continues to monitor the coronavirus respiratory disease (COVID-19), an outbreak of respiratory disease caused by a novel (new) coronavirus that has spread throughout much of the world, including in the United States. For more information about coronavirus cases in Fresno County, please visit the Fresno County Department of Public Health (FCDPH) website. We will continue to monitor the situation and update the campus community accordingly.

See “Campus Messages” to read the most recent campus messages. In addition, please visit this list of FAQs, which are updated frequently, for more information. The well-being of our campus community is our highest priority.

The University is in regular contact with the FCDPH, and has protocols in place with them to ensure quick and decisive communication and action as needed. (The FCDPH is working actively with state and federal health authorities, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to identify ill individuals and protect public health.)

Fresno State has emergency preparedness plans and procedures in place in the event of any impact or disruption to campus operations.

The Emergency Operations Center (EOC), is tasked with monitoring the situation continuously and to be responsive to questions and concerns from our campus community as this situation evolves.

Protecting Ourselves

It is important to follow these simple steps:

  • Become familiar with and recognize symptoms of the illness.
  • Seek care immediately if you have emergency warning signs, which include trouble breathing, persistent pain or pressure in the chest, new confusion, inability to stay awake or bluish lips and face.
  • Always practice good hygiene – wash your hands, for 20 seconds each time, with soap and water; cover your mouth while coughing or sneezing (into the crook of your elbow rather than your hands is best); avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands; and avoid sharing food, cups or utensils.
  • Get an annual flu shot.
  • Wear cloth face coverings in public settings.

Symptoms

Coronavirus (COVID-19) symptoms can include a high fever, cough, and difficulty breathing, similar to what you may feel with influenza or a bad cold. The incubation period (how soon the symptoms appear from the time of first exposure) for this virus appears to be 2-14 days. The virus has been detected in asymptomatic individuals, or people who do not show any symptoms, who may be able to spread the virus.

Any member of our community who has traveled to a potentially impacted area, either abroad or domestically, or has come in contact with someone who may have the virus AND is experiencing symptoms such as those described above should immediately contact their health care provider and seek medical attention.

Students

Students who are ill with flu-like symptoms can contact the Student Health and Counseling Center at 559.278.2734 or their primary health care provider if they have returned home.

Faculty and Staff

Faculty and staff who are ill with flu-like symptoms should stay home and contact their personal physician.

Fresno State will continue to monitor updates from the CDC, the California Department of Public Health, and the FCDPH in order to provide the most up-to-date and accurate information available.
