Planning for the Fall 2020 Semester
In keeping with our mission to boldly educate and empower students for success, Fresno State’s plan for fall 2020 is based upon a directive from the California State University (CSU) system (announced on May 12) that most course delivery will be virtual, with a limited number of essential in-person courses.
Fresno State’s overarching goal is to provide a quality educational experience for our students while protecting the health and well-being of our campus community. The comprehensive campus plan — developed by a 19-member task force composed of students, faculty, staff and administrators and approved by the CSU Chancellor’s Office — fulfills said goal.
Fall 2020 Campus Plan
- The campus plan allows for a daily campus population of approximately 2,200 students, faculty and staff, of which approximately 1,000 students will be enrolled in 101 on-campus courses.
- Daily health screenings and temperature checks began Aug. 17 for anyone who will be coming on campus on weekdays during the fall semester. Optional baseline testing was offered Aug. 10 to 21. In an effort to continue to protect the health and well-being of the campus community, the University is offering voluntary monthly COVID-19 testing (at no cost) for students, faculty and staff who have been approved to be on campus during the fall 2020 semester.
- Starting July 1, a multiphase repopulation plan began with the return of a limited number of staff needed to prepare for in-person instruction, including those employees who may have exhausted their Temporary Paid Administrative Leave (CPAL).
- Most employees who can continue to work remotely will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Student assistant positions will be limited to those functional areas required to support in-person courses. (Employees with questions regarding their work location for the fall, should contact their supervising manager or department chair.)
- Beginning Aug. 15, faculty and staff who need to support in-person instruction returned to work on campus. The first day of instruction was Wednesday, Aug. 19.
- For those who will be on campus in the fall, it will be each person’s responsibility to adhere to all public-health protocols to reduce the risk of infection among our campus community members and their families. This includes using face masks, practicing good hygiene and maintaining social distance.
Recognizing the pandemic is a fluid situation, we will continue to review and adjust our campus plans and services, as necessary. In addition, the University is prepared for the possibility that all courses may need to transition to virtual instruction at any point during the fall semester.
As we repopulate the campus, there will be updated protocols for those who will be on campus. Please review the key areas below for important information you need to know.
