AFSA Book Award

Each year, the Asian Faculty and Staff Association (AFSA) is proud to honor and recognize outstanding Fresno State students with a $500 award, to be used toward academic expenses, such as books and course material. This past academic year, we honored Christine Andrew, a graduate student in Social Work, and Henry Nguyen, a senior majoring in Marketing. Two more students will be honored during the 2020-21 academic year.

In order to apply, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Enrolled at Fresno State during the time of application or during Spring 2021

  • Must be an undergraduate, graduate or credential student with a minimum 2.0 GPA

  • Able to discuss contributions to the on-campus and/or off-campus API community

  • Able to discuss demonstrated financial need 

  • Willing to reflect on recent issues impacting the wider AAPI community

Application procedure: 

  • Apply by the deadline of March 5, 2021 at 5 p.m. at

  • Before applying, please have the following information prepared:

    • Your name and contact information (phone number and Fresno State email)

    • Expected graduation term at Fresno State

    • Recent service, leadership, and/or contributions to the AAPI community

    • Statement of your financial need (not to exeed 300 words)

    • An essay (not to exceed 500 words) that addresses the following:

Over the course of the past year, a number of issues related to AAPI communities have gained public attention. These include: 

The anti-Asian sentiment with regard to the COVID-19 Pandemic
Movements for racial solidarity between Black and Asian communities
Difficulties connecting with family and friends living around the world
And more

Please share your own response to these or related issues impacting AAPI communities and individuals. How would this book award help you do your part to address these or related concerns?

Review process:

A review committee will read and score all applications based on the above criteria. Awardees will be notified via email by March 26, 2021, and must attend an online AFSA award recognition event scheduled for April 6, 2021.
