Bridge to Doctorate

The Bridge-to-the-Doctorate Program (BDP) is an NSF initiative within the LSAMP Program to provide former LSAMP baccalaureate degree graduates with a fellowship for graduate studies. The ultimate goal is to increase the number of underrepresented students that obtain a PhD degree in a STEM field.

Cal State Northridge has been designated as the site for the 9th cohort of the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation – Bridge to the Doctorate (LSAMP-BD) Program.

The LSAMP BD program offers outstanding support at the Master’s level, providing tuition, a generous living stipend ($30,000 each year), health insurance, funds for travel and research, and extensive academic support. This is a wonderful opportunity for students interested in pursuing advanced studies in Science, Engineering, and Math to gain research experience and receive support at the Master’s level in preparation for the Ph.D.

We are currently accepting applications for this program. To be eligible, candidates must have participated in LSAMP or AMP at any university or community college as undergraduates. Please forward this email to any student that may be interested.

Of course, if you or your students have questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact me at karla.pelletier@csun.edu or call 818-677-2191.

Bridge to Doctorate - SUNY LSAMP Binghamton University (New York)

The SUNY LSAMP BD program at Binghamton University, slated to begin in August 2011, has been recommended for NSF funding.  This program establishes a bridge helping students to obtain a Ph.D. by providing the financial support to pursue graduate study, faculty mentors to guide students academically and professionally, and a support network of staff assisting them in accomplishing their goals.

The successful applicant will plan to pursue the Ph.D. degree in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) discipline.  Applicants to the program are evaluated on the basis of their record of achievement, as well as their research experiences, motivation, and connection to their field of study.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Participated in an LSAMP Program
  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline with a 3.0 GPA or better
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Accepted into a STEM graduate program at Binghamton University
  • Want to pursue a Ph.D. in a STEM discipline

The benefits of becoming a SUNY LSAMP BD Fellow include the following:

  • Tuition, student health insurance & fees waiver
  • Student stipend of $30,000 annually
  • Faculty mentoring
  • Participation in professional conferences and meetings
  • Links to research and professional opportunities
  • Enriched academic services and support

You can apply to Binghamton University late; graduate school applications that arrive after the department deadlines will be considered for SUNY LSAMP BD purposes. The Binghamton University Graduate School application is waived for LSAMP students; graduate school application fee is waived for LSAMP, McNair, EOP, HEOP, SEEK, and Project 1000 students (just write in "LSAMP" on the Application Fee Waiver Form).
