About the Office of Community Based Learning
Community Based Learning (CBL) is located within Fresno
State’s Kremen School of Education and Human Development, and
provides
community-based involvement for students pursuing
bilingual, special education, multiple and single subject teaching
credentials.
CBL recruits and provides
scholarship opportunities for future teachers. It
links undergraduates with paid experience in education as they
pursue their teaching credential.
Placement coordination is provided for students
entering paid teaching internships or employment as teachers.CBL
also provides
professional development and
enrichment opportunities, like Saturday Academies,
to supplement credential courses.
Most future teachers that CBL serves are first generation
college students with a primary language other than English.
The Community Based Learning office staff has found that
institutional processes and paperwork required in degree and
credential programs often become barriers to paraprofessionals, in
addition to the task of juggling work, school, and family
responsibilities. Assistance is provided in registration,
advisement, financial aid, tutoring, and personal situations that
may inhibit progress toward credential completion. Potential
problems are resolved on an individual basis.
The office has a ten-year history of an
85
percent (85 %) placement rate of the program's
completers with local school districts.
