First-time Freshmen

I am a first-time Freshmen...what are some important things that I should consider prior to and during my first year of college?Freshman

Accept/Decline Notice
Students admitted to the university will be requested to accept or decline their offer of admission by a specified deadline. It is important to respond so that admission will be confirmed.

Advanced Placement Examination Credit
Students may qualify for college credit for passing scores on Advanced Placement Examinations http://www.fresnostate.edu/catalog/academic-regulations/academic-placement.html offered by the College Entrance Examination Board completed while enrolled in high school. Limited credit will apply to the Liberal Studies major.

EPT/ELM Examinations
Unless exempt all entering freshmen must take the English Placement Test (EPT) and the Entry Level Math test (ELM)after admission and prior to registration. These are placement tests that determine if remediation is needed for specific course enrollment.

The score earned on the EPT provides a baseline for directed self-placement in the proper freshmen writing class(es).

A passing score on the ELM provides access to enrollment in the Quantitative Reasoning requirement for general education (B4). For Liberal Studies majors this is MATH 10A. Students who do not pass the ELM must enroll in the appropriate remedial courses.

Dog Days
All first-time freshmen are required to attend a DOG DAYS freshman orientation. This is an all-day event where students are introduced to valuable information that supports their successful transition to Fresno State. Students will also be introduced to the Liberal Studies advising staff. Upon completion of a Dog Days freshmen orientation students will be permitted to enroll in fall courses immediately.

There are several DOG DAYS dates available to choose from. When registering, be sure to check the schedule and select the appropriate Liberal Studies date.

Second Semester Freshmen Advising
Freshmen in their second semester at the university must satisfy this requirement prior to registering in April for fall classes. If not, registration will be blocked. You must see a Liberal Studies advisor in order to have the hold removed.
