Liberal Studies Program
Liberal Studies is one of the largest majors at California State University, Fresno. The curriculum leads to a Bachelor of Arts degree within the Kremen School of Education and Human Development.
It is important to note that four different Liberal Studies majors are offered here at the university. All of these majors are "multiple subject matter preparation programs" leading to the elementary (Multiple Subject) and special education (Education Specialist) teaching credentials.
• Liberal Studies - Credential Option Major - catalog years 1991-1999
There are three distinct Liberal Studies Blended Majors :
• Liberal Studies Blended Major - catalog years 1999-2004
• Liberal Studies Blended Major - catalog years 2005 & 2006
• Liberal Studies Blended Major - catalog years 2007 to the present
Note that credential courses are not a part of the Liberal Studies majors.
Coursework for the credential programs follows completion of the major courses. Students who wish to enter into the Multiple Subject or Education Specialist Credential programs must apply and qualify for enrollment by completing all credential admission requirements including successfully passing all required tests.
Students wishing to complete a secondary credential (Single Subject) to teach high school or middle school do not complete a Liberal Studies major. These students will need to earn a degree with a major in the subject they plan to teach.
What does "Blended" mean?
Many of the courses in the Liberal Studies Blended majors include, not only subject matter, but also an introduction to the study of pedagogy (art of teaching), thus the term " Blended ". Students completing the “ Blended ” majors have the "opportunity" to complete their major and Multiple Subject Credential or Education Specialist credential within the degree. This is an intricate major and requires that students maintain close contact with Liberal Studies advisors in the Education Student Services Center in order to navigate through the major and the credential program appropriately.
