Option in Curriculum and Instruction
The 30-unit Master of Arts degree in Education with a concentration in Curriculum and Instruction (M.A.Ed.-C&I) is designed for teachers and other professionals who desire advanced study in curriculum, instruction, educational psychology, research design, and educational statistics. Although a majority of M.A.Ed.-C&I students are teachers, a teaching credential is not a requirement for admission.
Graduates of the M.A.Ed.-C&I program have held a wide variety of positions: Director of Research, Evaluation and Assessment for a large school district; teacher on special assignment for mathematics; literacy coach; teaching assistant and doctoral student in educational technology; grade level teacher-leader; high school department chair; educational consultant; education coordinator for a national corporation; research associate for state and federal grants; instructor of educational statistics at Fresno State; and many more. A number of M.A.Ed.-C&I graduates have also chosen to remain in the classroom and use the knowledge they have gained in the program to enhance their instructional effectiveness. The program is a pathway to helping you meet your unique professional goals, whatever they may be!
In addition to taking 15 semester units of required coursework (please see listing
below), students select 15 units of electives in an area of professional interest
with the guidance of the program coordinator. For teachers, six units of recent post-baccalaureate
credential coursework may be transferred into the program and counted as elective
units. Recently-taken BTSA units may also be used as electives. Students will complete
either a project or a thesis as a culminating experience. All degree coursework must be taken within a 5-year time frame.
Interested students may also pursue a Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Technology (CASET) in conjunction with the M.A.Ed.-C&I or as a separate course of study. The CASET consists of five 3-unit courses focused on educational technology (CI 225, CI 227, CI 230, and two electives). Up to six units (two courses) may also be used as electives in the M.A.Ed.-C&I program. Students who only want to earn the CASET without the master's degree can do so in two semesters, at a current cost of $6513. (Per Federal regulations, click here for Gainful Employment information.)
Listed below are the courses required for the M.A.Ed.-C&I program, as well as the CASET:
Required Courses for the M.A.Ed.-C&I Program
1. Advanced Curriculum Theory and Analysis (CI 250; 3 units) – Theory and practice of curriculum development, evaluation, and revision. Study of contemporary problems and curriculum approaches to meet societal needs.
2. Advanced Instructional Theory and Strategies (CI 275; 3 units) – Study and application of contemporary research and theory in teaching and instruction.
3. Seminar in Advanced Educational Psychology (CI 285; 3 units) – Seminar on the psychological foundations of education; nature and characteristics of development, learning processes, and forces that affect educational growth.
Educational Measurement and Program Evaluation (ERE 288; 3 units) – Procedures and issues involved in the measurement and evaluation of educational programs. Applications in educational settings are emphasized. [In the MAE-C&I program, students are required to take either CI 285 or ERE 288. They may also take both courses and use one as an elective.]
4. Research in Education (ERE 220; 3 units; prerequisite: ERE 153) – Seminar in research methodology, including identification of research problems; use of library and internet resources; data collection, analysis, and interpretation; and writing a research report (lays groundwork for the project or thesis).
5. Project (CI 298; 3 units) or Thesis (CI 299; 3 units) – A project consists of a significant undertaking appropriate to education such as curriculum development or research related to an area of professional interest. A thesis is similar to a project, but all C&I theses involve a significant research component. Please see http://www.fresnostate.edu/gradstudies/thesis/ for information related to a thesis.
In addition to these required courses, many students need to take ERE 153 (Educational Statistics) because this course is a prerequisite for ERE 220 and also ERE 288. ERE 153 may be used as an elective in the MAE-C&I program. ERE 153 course description: Methods of describing, analyzing, and interpreting data; statistical methods, including correlation, regression, t-tests, one- and two-way ANOVA designs, and chi-square. Required Courses for the CASET Program: CI 225, CI 227, and CI 230
Two additional educational technology courses are also required. Students may use
two of the CI 280T courses listed below. (Any of these courses may be used as electives
in the MAE-C&I program, too.)
Integrating Computer Technology into the Curriculum (CI 225, 3 units) – Create student-centered materials with multimedia (e.g., video, animated graphics, and sound files). Learn how to capture video to electronic (computer) files from live TV, videotape, laser discs, and video cameras. This class will be flexible enough for both beginners and advanced computer users. (CI 225 is currently offered as a hybrid course.)
Current Issues and Trends in Educational Technology (CI 227, 3 units) – Investigate how computer technology can facilitate learning, discuss past mistakes of implementing new technologies, and investigate the potential of computer technology in schools. Learn how to use threaded newsgroups as a participant. Half of the sessions will be held virtually.
Planning and Implementing Innovative Technology Programs (CI 230, 3 units) – Strategies for implementing change in educational settings; data collection and analysis; strategic planning, managing resources, and instituting effective staff development programs; locating and developing funding sources; and gaining parent and community support.
Designing Motivating Instruction (CI 280T, 3 units) – This course is designed to explore instructional design, a number of motivational theories, and the integration of technology into instruction. Students will investigate theories and models of designing motivating instruction, as well as investigate exemplary activities and strategies to motivate target groups.
Exploring Innovative Technologies (CI 280T, 3 units) – This course provides opportunities for students to explore fifteen different innovative technologies (e.g., 3D printing, gamification, data analytics, etc.). Together with the instructor, students will discuss and plan ways that these might be integrated into learning experiences in classrooms and co-curricular activities.
Exploring Technology and Critical Thinking (CI 280T, 3 units) – This class involves series of explorations of various technological tools – simulations, problem-solving applications, complex search engines, etc. The focus is on the theoretical foundations of critical thinking and how specific applications of student-centered instruction can improve the quality and depth of teaching and learning in classrooms.
