The 30-unit Master of Arts degree in Education with a concentration in Curriculum and Instruction (MAE-C&I) is designed for teachers and other professionals who desire advanced study in curriculum, instruction, educational psychology, research design, and educational statistics. Although a majority of MAE-C&I students are teachers, a teaching credential is not a requirement for admission.

Graduates of the MAE-C&I program hold a wide variety of positions: Director of Research, Evaluation and Assessment for a large school district; teacher on special assignment for mathematics; literacy coach; teaching assistant and doctoral student in educational technology; grade level teacher-leader; high school department chair; educational consultant; education coordinator for a national corporation; research associate for state and federal grants; instructor of educational statistics at Fresno State; and many more. A number of MAE-C&I graduates have also chosen to remain in the classroom and use the knowledge they have gained in the program to enhance their instructional effectiveness. The program is a pathway to helping you meet your unique professional goals, whatever they may be!

In addition to taking 15 semester units of required coursework (please see listing below), students select 15 units of electives in an area of professional interest with the guidance of the program coordinator. For teachers, up to nine units of recent post-baccalaureate credential coursework may be transferred into the program and counted as elective units. Students will complete either a project or a thesis as a culminating experience.

Interested students may also pursue a Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Technology (CASET) in conjunction with the MAE-C&I or as a separate course of study. The CASET consists of five 3-unit courses focused on educational technology (CI 225, CI 227, CI 230, and two electives). Up to six units (two courses) may be used as electives in the MAE-C&I program.

Listed below are the courses required for the MA-C&I program, as well as the CASET:

Required Courses for the MAE-C&I Program

Advanced Curriculum Theory and Analysis (CI 250; 3 units) – Theory and practice of curriculum development, evaluation, and revision. Study of contemporary problems and curriculum approaches to meet societal needs.

Advanced Instructional Theory and Strategies (CI 275; 3 units) – Study and application of contemporary research and theory in teaching and instruction.

Seminar in Advanced Educational Psychology (CI 285; 3 units) – Seminar on the psychological foundations of education; nature and characteristics of development, learning processes, and forces that affect educational growth.


Educational Measurement and Program Evaluation (ERE 288; 3 units) – Procedures and issues involved in the measurement and evaluation of educational programs. Applications in educational settings are emphasized. [In the MAE-C&I program, students can take either CI 285 or ERA 288.]

Research in Education (ERE 220; 3 units; prerequisite: ERE 153) – Seminar in research methodology, including identification of research problems; use of library and internet resources; data collection, analysis, and interpretation; and writing a research report (lays groundwork for the project or thesis).

Project (CI 298; 3 units) or Thesis (CI 299; 3 units) – A project consists of a significant undertaking appropriate to education such as curriculum development or research related to an area of professional interest. A thesis is similar to a project, but all C&I theses involve a significant research component. Please see for information related to a thesis. 

In addition to these required courses, many students need to take ERE 153 (Educational Statistics) because this course is a prerequisite for ERE 220 and also ERE 288. ERA 153 may be used as an elective in the MAE-C&I program. ERE 153 course description: Methods of describing, analyzing, and interpreting data; statistical methods, including correlation, regression, t-tests, one- and two-way ANOVA designs, and chi-square. Computer applications during lab activities.


Required Courses for the CASET Program (Note: 6 additional units of coursework are needed. Discuss options with the CASET program coordinator.)

Integrating Computer Technology into the Curriculum (CI 225) – Create student-centered materials with multimedia (e.g., video, animated graphics, and sound files). Learn how to capture video to electronic (computer) files from live TV, videotape, laser discs, and video cameras. This class will be flexible enough for both beginners and advanced computer users. (CI 225 is currently offered as a hybrid course.)

Current Issues and Trends in Educational Technology (CI 227) – Investigate how computer technology can facilitate learning, discuss past mistakes of implementing new technologies, and investigate the potential of computer technology in schools. Learn how to use threaded newsgroups as a participant. Half of the sessions will be held virtually.

Planning and Implementing Innovative Technology Programs (CI 230) – Strategies for implementing change in educational settings; data collection and analysis; strategic planning, managing resources, and instituting effective staff development programs; locating, and developing funding sources; and gaining parent and community support.
