South Valley Education Initiative
For many South Valley students, college is not a reality but instead an unattainable aspiration. From Stockton to Bakersfield, Central California has the lowest educational attainment of any region in our nation with fewer than 16% of its residents holding a college degree. Through the South Valley Education Initiative, a scholarship endowment will be created, providing a solution and opportunity for these deserving students.
Teacher Residency Program
In addition to providing scholarship opportunities, California State University, Fresno is focused on improving student academic achievement in the region by recruiting, training, and retaining highly qualified individuals to the teaching profession. The Teacher Residency Program is a successful partnership previously used in other districts that will address the critical need in middle grades. Helping teachers become prepared through the teacher residency program, which includes supervision, is key to addressing the need in the region.
The commitment of the teacher residents is to teach in partner South Valley districts for a minimum of three years after completing the program. This will ensure that teachers learning in the South Valley will be placed in those districts and ultimately make the areas where they live a better place.
It is imperative that a perpetual endowment be established in order to provide scholarships for these qualified and deserving South Valley High School students, as well as the teacher residents. People are the greatest untapped resource for improving our Valley’s economic vitality and quality of life. Education is the key to harnessing this resource.
One of the wisest and most meaningful investments that individuals can make is in higher education and the future of young people. Such gifts provide vital support, and will assure that the outstanding education in our region will continue to thrive now and for generations.
