Credentials Overview

Specialist credential and graduate programs in Special Education at California State University, Fresno are designed to prepare educators to make a difference in a diverse society. The programs are based on the philosophy that all individuals can learn and that all individuals with special needs can be respected, productive, and contributing members of society.

Our unique programs have received state and national recognition for innovation. We offer program options that incorporate timely themes such as family involvement, and inclusive collaboration to prepare educators to meet the needs of all students in our diverse communities.

The Pupil Personnel Services Credential is required for employment as a counselor in elementary, middle/intermediate, and secondary public schools in California. This credential may be attained in conjunction with a master's degree, or may itself be the educational objective. Some California school districts stipulate that applicants have either prior teaching experience or a master's degree or both to be employed as a counselor, but this is not mandated by law. The PPS Credential Program consists of 48 units, most of which overlap with coursework taken for the MS in Counseling: Option in Counseling and Student Services, Specialization in K-12.
