Pilgrims: A Lake Wobegon Romance
a new novel by Garrison Keillor (2009)
your gift with a $150 membership donation

Wobegon goes abroad in this rousing and moving story of a group trip to Rome Margie Krebsbach dreams up the idea of a trip to Rome, hoping to get her husband Carl to make love to her-he's been sleeping across the hall and she has no idea why. She finds a patriotic purpose for the journey. A Lake Wobegon boy, Gussy Norlander, died in the liberation of Rome, 1944, and his grave, according to his elderly brother, Norbert, is in a neglected weed patch near the Colosseum. So it's decided they will go to clean Gussy's final resting place. Margie is unprepared for the enthusiastic response- fifty people want to go with her, including her nemesis, the mayor of Lake Wobegon, Carl's bossy sister, Eloise, Mr. Berge the town drunk, and her treacherous mother-in-law. Margie fends off some of the would-be travelers with a graphic handout on the dangers of typhus and food poisoning and the seriousness of diarrhea, but ten applicants remain, though Carl is not sure he wants to go after all. At this, a heartbroken Margie gets the motley crew to the airport and aboard the plane, and then discovers one of the secret pleasures of travel-safely away from Lake Wobegon, the pilgrims' memories are quickened and they recall long-forgotten incidents. In the warm circle of kinship, as they enter alien territory, they tell stories of astonishing frankness and self-revelation all delivered with Keillor's trademark humor.

The Man on the Radio In the Red Shoes
Documentary film DVD release
your gift with a $150 membership donation
The acclaimed documentary film, "Garrison Keillor: The Man on the Radio in the Red Shoes" has its broadcast premiere July 1st on American Masters on PBS. Produced and directed by award-winning filmmaker Peter Rosen, the full-length film is an up-close and personal look at America’s foremost humorist and commentator, Garrison Keillor, as he takes his skits and jokes, music and monologues across the country in his traveling radio show, spinning his stories into American gold. This free-form, intimate look at the private man in the public spotlight goes behind the scenes of America’s most popular radio show, A Prairie Home Companion, and inside the imagination of the man who created it. Approx. 86 minutes

A Prairie Home Companion - The Movie (dir. Robert Altman)

your gift with a $150 membership donation

A star studded Hollywood adaptation of Garrison Keillor's famous radio show, this motion picture was also director Robert Altman's final film. The movie takes place during the fictional last live performance of the show as new owners have sent an axeman (Tommy Lee Jones) to close the show. Another fantasy element is thrown in as an angel (Virginia Madsen) stalks the theater to take one of the performers. Keillor essentially plays himself, even using his own name for the character. Lily Tomlin and Meryl Streep play the singing Johnson Sisters, with Lindsay Lohan as a suicide-obsessed daughter of Streep. Woody Harrelson and John C. Reilly are hilarious as the slightly off-color singing cowboy duo, Dusty & Lefty. Kevin Kline stars as security guard Guy Noir, and Maya Rudolph also appears as a pregnant stage coordinator. (PG-13)
