About the Clubs and Organizations
While studying viticulture and enology at Fresno State, many students enhance their academic career by becoming involved in our university's student organizations Some of our students also participate in the Jordan College of Agricultural Science Ag Ambassador program.
VITICULTURE CLUB: The Viticulture Club, one of the oldest clubs on the Fresno State campus, is also one of the most active clubs. It's membership is comprised of viticulture and enology students who work together on a variety of fun educational, fundraising, and networking activities. In November each year, members host their Annual Fall Harvest Dinner, a popular event that brings alumni and friends together and is designed to help raise funds for the new year's annual activities.
Each year the Viticulture Club also participates in two major FFA statewide events -- the Vine Pruning Contest (February) and the Vine Judging Contest (April) held on the Fresno State campus. These events are a great way for high school and college students to meet our alumni, who support the club by participating as FFA Contest judges. Their Papa Petrucci 5K Vineyard Run, Walk, or Stroll in the Fresno State vineyards is another popular event that is held each spring to raise funds for the V. E. Petrucci Library.
From social events to educational forums (with industry guest speakers), to educational field trips to various grape growing regions within our state, the Viticulture Club is hard at work increasing their viticultural knowledge while raising funds for their endowment fund, which supports several annual student scholarships.
ENOLOGY SOCIETY: The Enology Society is an organization for individuals 21 and older with an interest
in promoting the education of wine through organoleptic evaluation, lecturers, and
tours. Many upper level enology students join the Society each semester to expand
their knowledge of wine. The Enology Society has a long history at Fresno State and
many of our alumni are proud to have served as officers of this organization.
Their weekly meetings include discussions about wine, winemaking styles, and wine regions and often include guest winemakers who provide insight into the world of winemaking.
As a group, Enology Society members also attend numerous professional meetings of the wine industry including the annual Unified Wine and Grape Symposium in Sacramento. Their major fundraising event held each spring brings together students and alumni and helps generate funds to support their educational mission and activities for the year.
About the Viticulture and Enology Alumni Association
Viticulture and enology alumni members are found throughout the state and world in prominent viticultural and wine related positions.
The university has been producing graduates in the field of viticulture and enology for over sixty years. In the early years, two individual groups were formed -- the Viticulture Alumni, and the Enology Alumni.
For years, the Viticulture Alumni Club was one of the most active alumni groups on the Fresno State campus. In 1982, they began the first annual "A Celebration of Wine" wine tasting fundraiser and, as a result, the Viticulture Alumni was able to establish an endowment fund through the Fresno State Foundation in 1996 that continues to support the V. E. Petrucci Library today.
For many years, the Enology Alumni Club also remained active in their support of the enology programs at this university. Working with the enology students, they hosted a wine tasting event for several years called "The Fresno Wine Experience" which raised funds for enology scholarships.
In 2004, however, the Viticulture Alumni Club and Enology Alumni Association joined efforts to create a Viticulture and Enology Alumni Association.
Today, the Viticulture and Alumni work together as one unified association to support the viticulture and enology programs at California State University, Fresno.
Their organization continues to raise funds for the V. E. Petrucci Library, a collection of the Henry Madden Library - conveniently housed in the Fresno State Viticulture and Enology building on campus.
Each year the Alumni help sponsor several Department of Viticulture and Enology events, including the Annual Fresno State Viticulture and Enology Alumni Reunion, held in conjunction with the Unified Wine and Grape Symposium in Sacramento, as well as the Department's annual dinner to recognize graduating students in the program.
Through industry partnerships and attendance at events, our viticulture and enology alumni of this institution remain interested in the current programs and are especially support of student events and activities.
Their individual and collective dedication to Fresno State's viticulture and enology program is sincerely appreciated.
