Dietetic Internship

Notification of Program Change(s)

The Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND®) Board met July 28-30, 2021 and granted the Food Science and Nutrition Department approval for a substantive change to add a Food and Nutritional Master of Science degree to the current dietetic internship, beginning Fall 2022. Potential candidates who will be applying for the DICAS spring 2021 match – the program designation will provide a 30 unit master of science degree and a minimum of 1,000 experiential supervise practice hours combined over a two year period. A verification statement will only be provided to internship graduates at the end of the two-year program, once both supervised practice requirements and master’s degree requirements are met.

The current stand-alone, certificate of advanced study dietetic internship, will be phased out to be completed by May 2022 and will no longer be available. All applicants considering our program will be applying to a combined masters and dietetic internship over a two year timeframe. The Department of Nutrition and Food Science will continue to offer a separate MS program in Nutritional Sciences. The MS program is for:

  • Students wishing to complete an MS degree prior to applying to non-degree granting Dietetic Internship programs
  • Preparing students for careers in college teaching, healthcare, industry, community agencies, or graduate study beyond the master’s degree

Program Description

The California State University, Fresno Dietetic Internship is a 9-month, full-time, unpaid program with a culturally competent health promotion/disease prevention concentration. This internship prepares graduates to serve the diverse needs of the San Joaquin Valley and beyond. Interns complete supervised practice experiences in a variety of facilities in the Central San Joaquin Valley of California, including a veterans' hospital, a state prison, a school district, two private hospitals, an out-patient diabetes program and cooperative extension. Requirements

  1. Completed a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution.
  2. Completed an approved Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) verification statement and or declaration of intent within the last 5 years.
  3. Earned a minimum cumulative and overall DPD of 3.0 GPA .
  4. Earned a minimum score of 138V/136Q  on the GRE General Test. GRE is required of applicants for admittance.
