GEORGETTE MELLO WALKS FOR A CURE
The Division of Graduate Studies staff prides itself on its commitment to students and in fostering a caring attitude toward others. Georgette Mello, Graduate Evaluator, is proof that this commitment extends to everyone, including those at some distance from campus.
On January 6, Georgette traveled to Disney World
in Orlando, Florida to walk 26.2 miles for the Leukemia and Lymphoma
Society. Mello, who is a daily walker, trained for
over four months. In preparation, her regular 3 miles a day turned
into training walks of 9, 15, and then 20 miles. Mello said that
the last three miles of the marathon were a little difficult, but
the crowd and her commitment to the cause were her inspiration.
She completed her walk in 6 hours, 46 minutes, and in the process
raised $3,800 to further research into curing and treating this
devastating disease. A total of 9 million dollars was raised by
thousands of participants at this event.
Graduate students at Fresno State have long known of her dedication. Georgette has worked on campus since 1981 and is known by just about everyone. She joined the Graduate Office in 1994 and assists students in their admission and special needs to gain graduate student status.
We are very proud of this talented staff member and hope you may also get to know her.
