Description:

In this workshop, modeling instruction methods will be applied to concepts of mathematics.  This method emphasizes conceptual development
through inquiry methods, white boarding strategies, and effective student discourse.  Participants will learn effective applications of calcuator- and computer-based technologies as a real-world basis for concept development.  Participants will also develop skills in Socratic dialog and use of whiteboards to assist their students in developing conceptual models in mathematics.  The emphasis be on concepts developed in middle-school and high school algebra.

Statement of Learning Outcomes

Participant will learn how to:

  • Use calculators and technology in ways that significantly increase student understanding;

  •  Use hands-on, guided laboratory activities;

  •  Engage students in Socratic dialog both in lecture and laboratory;

  •  Address common student misconceptions;

  •  Use descriptive, graphical, mathematical, and diagrammatic representations;

  •  Develop a small set of conceptual models that students can use to explain discipline dependent phenomena;

  •  Create a student-centered mathematics classroom.
