Programs

In the classroomCalifornia State University Fresno has been awarding a BS degree in Electrical  Engineering since the 1950s. The Computer Engineering program has been  offered since the early 1990s.
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering currently offers the following BS and MS degree programs:
  • BS Degree in Computer Engineering (ABET accredited)
  • BS Degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET accredited)

Computer Engineering

Computer Engineering  encompasses digital and computer systems, embedded processors, digital signal processing, RF and wireless systems, optical communications, solid-state electronics, integrated circuit design and fabrication, computer networks and software engineering.   Our Computer Engineering Program provides a balanced curriculum by emphasizing the breadth and depth in computer engineering subjects as described below:   
  • A strong emphasis on electrical  engineering (primarily electronic circuits and systems) 
  • A broad basis in mathematics, physical science, and general engineering 
  • Fundamentals of computer science including programming methodology, software engineering
  • Introductory and advanced concepts in  the design of computers and computer systems 
A rich set of technical area courses is offered to allow students to broaden their knowledge within any of several computer engineering areas.

Computer Engineering Program Objectives

The Computer Engineering Program through the academic structure of California State University, Fresno awards degrees to students who within three to five years of graduation, through work experience and/or graduate education in the engineering field will be expected to
  1. have grown technically and be productive in their respective workplaces.
  2. be capable of addressing technical problems of increasing complexity.
  3. communicate and function effectively in an interdisciplinary team environment at a level commensurate with their career development.
  4. demonstrate an ability for independent learning and continued professional as well as ethical development.

Computer Engineering Program  Learning Outcomes

Graduates of the Computer Engineering program are expected to achieve the following student learning outcomes.

a.   "an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering"

b.   "an ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data"

c.   "an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability"

d.   "an ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams"

e.   "an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems"

f.    "an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility"

g.   "an ability to communicate effectively"

h.   "the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context"

i.    "a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning"

j.    "a knowledge of contemporary issues"

k.   "an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice"

Electrical Engineering

The electrical engineering course of study broadly prepares the graduate for professional practice or graduate studies while offering several areas  of concentration.  Electrical engineers design and develop electronic  circuits, equipment and systems in the areas of electromagnetics , communications and control , computers and digital systems, physical electronics and optics,  power systems and energy conversion, and  control systems.
By the appropriate choice of technical area courses, the student may emphasize the following areas of specialization:
  • electronics and communications
  • computers and digital systems,
  • power and energy conversion and control systems.
A rich set of technical area courses is  available to allow students to broaden their knowledge within any of  several electrical engineering areas.
