ECE Department Mission

Dr. Gregory Kriehn and Graduate Student Nell Papavasilou taking measurements in the Optics Lab.The mission of the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is to fulfill the needs of the region and state by providing an undergraduate technical education in electrical engineering and computer engineering to a diverse group of students. Additionally, the department strives to continually update its program of study in order to qualify its graduates for positions in industry located in the region and beyond while providing sufficient breadth and depth in its program to assure its graduates a successful practice in the profession. At the same time, students are grounded in the rigorous scientific and theoretical foundations of the discipline, in order to enable graduates to enter and be successful in advanced level educational program of their choosing, but also to be able to build upon this strong foundation and extend it to new depth.

Advances in electrical and computer technologies have radically changed the way we live. This is a very exciting time for ECE students. The present demand for electrical and computer engineers is strong and it is expected to be become even stronger in the future due to the increasing needs of industry in the many relevant technologies that are advancing at a very fast pace. ECE education provides very rewarding careers related to computers, communication, energy, manufacturing, aerospace, biomedical, defense, robotics and automation to name a few.  Our department is dedicated to developing and producing students who will be well-prepared for today’s and tomorrow’s demand.

Programs

The ECE department is housed in the Lyles College of Engineering. It enrolls over 300 undergraduate and 35 graduate students (2011-2012). The department offers two ABET accredited BS degree programs and one MS in Engineering degree program with two options (Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering). The BS degree programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). In addition to providing a strong theoretical foundation in the subject matter, all programs provide curriculum based on intensive hands-on labs to enhance applied skills and prepare students for experimental research and the engineering practice. The department maintains many laboratory facilities where projects and research take place.

ECE Department currently offers the following programs:

  • BS Degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE, ABET accredited)
  • BS Degree in Computer Engineering (BSCompE, ABET accredited)
  • MS Degree in Engineering with an option in Electrical Engineering (MSE-EE)
  • MS Degree in Engineering with an option in Computer Engineering (MSE-CompE)

The department main office is located at EE254 in Engineering East building. The office is open Monday - Friday, 8AM to 5PM PDT (closed 12-1PM).

The Engineering East building is located at the south-east corner on Barstow and Jackson Avenue.
