Geology in the South Pacific
New Zealand overlies the boundary between Earth’s tectonic plates which has produced a dynamic and spectacular landscape most recently seen in the film “Lord of the Rings”.
We will see how organisms create and affect the geology, and the ways that geology controls life. We will examine geysers, geothermal power fields, recently active volcanoes, and the Alpine fault—one of Earth’s largest active fault zones.
We will tour glaciers and view first hand evidence of global warming, and see the changing uses of mineral resources, from ancient to modern, and how humans have adapted to the abundant geologic hazards, and have modified or preserved the land.
