Faculty and Undergraduate Research Teams
We are now accepting applications from faculty-student research team for the 2013 FURST program. This program provides support to 3 person research teams (faculty + 2 students) at primarily undergraduate, and minority serving institutions in order to (i) help establish an internally supported undergraduate research culture at the applicants’ institution, and (ii) give faculty at such institutions an opportunity to develop collaborative research partnerships.
Faculty on each applicant team should have research interests aligned with either
- Algebraic Knot Theory, or
- Complex Analysis and the Distribution of Zeros of Analytic Functions.
It is expected that faculty awardees will engage in research projects in one of these two areas. After the awards are made, the faculty involved will collectively select research problems for their students, as well as problems for the faculty collaborative research projects. Once these have been chosen, the program will follow the timeline below:
| Activity | Location | |
| Spring 2013 | Teams learn background material | Home institution |
| June 10 - June 28 | Preliminary research begins | Home institution |
| July 1 - July 26 | Collaborative Immersion | CSU Fresno |
| July 29 - August 2 | Conclusion of the summer experience | Home institution |
| Fall 2013 | Teams continue research | Home institution |
| January 2014 | Reunion and special session at JMM | Baltimore, MD |
| Spring 2014 | Recruitment of new research students, continuing faculty collaboration | Home institution |
What the program provides. $5,000.00 towards a course buyout for the participating faculty, summer housing for the one month immersion at Fresno State for the team, summer stipends for the students ($1,750.00) and faculty ($1,500.00), and a total of $1,000.00 in travel support for each student participant to Fresno State and to the JMM in Baltimore.
What the program requires. A letter of commitment from the applicant’s institution stating that 1 full course buyout will be given to the faculty in exchange for the $5,000.00; time commitment from the research teams to carry out the proposed background preparation and initial research at their own institution; research teams to travel to Fresno State in July, 2013 for the immersion experience; teams to continue the research during the fall of 2013 and present their results at the 2014 JMM, in a session dedicated to FURST.
We expect that teams will recruit new members in the spring of 2014, and that faculty participants will pursue internal funding to support the research activities in the year following the FURST award.
