One of the objectives of HCOP is to assist students in the process of applying to health professional programs. One way of providing this assistance is by attending pre-professional conferences. HCOP provides transportation services to many of these events. We usually ask that students register for the conference, followed by a visit to the HCOP office where the student will sign-up to attend the event and leaving a refundable deposit (deposit is refunded at the time of boarding transportation). A couple of favorites are listed below (SUMMA, Dia De Los Muertos and California Forum for Diversity in Graduate Education).
Stanford University Minority Medical Association (SUMMA) Conference (Click to register)
Every year, SUMMA hosts the largest minority premedical conference on the west coast, typically drawing 400-600 attendees each year. The conference focuses on increasing the numbers of underrepresented minorities in medicine. This event is usually held during the first weekend in February.
Dia De Los Muertos Pre-medical Conference
Pre-medical undergraduate students from 2-year and 4-year colleges and universities from across the state attend the DDLM conference. Activities Include: Speakers, Student Panels, Mock Interviews, Networking, Raffle Prizes, and Gross Anatomy Lab. This conference is usually held in November.
Many more summer programs are featured in the summer program booklet available at the HCOP office.
We encourage students to get involved in campus clubs and organizations related to your field of interest (Caduceus, Fresno State American Medical Student Association (AMSA), Dental Club, Optometry Club, Pharmacy Club, Student Health Science Association, etc.).
