Doctor of Physical Therapy Advising

The Fresno State Department of Physical Therapy offers various four types of advising to meet the needs of prospective students. 

However, prior to participating in an advising session, please review the Application Instructions and Timeline, Requirements and Prerequisite Courses and Frequently Asked Questions links on this website.

Students interested in applying for the Doctorate of Physical Therapy program at Fresno State are encouraged to attend an advising session in the Physical Therapy Department after they seek advising at their College's Advising Center, link for College Advising Center contact information available at bottom of University Advising Center website. All applicants must hold or be eligible to receive a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university by the end of the spring semester/quarter prior to admission to the program. Any major is accepted. Be sure to plan your major courses and physical therapy prerequisites accordingly.

Office hours during the academic year for the Admissions Coordinator are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and Friday between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m.  These hours are subject to change depending on student and department needs. 

Email and phone inquiries will be answered on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Drop-In Advising is not available at this time.

(1) Group Pre-Physical Therapy Advising Sessions are conducted by Physical Therapy Department faculty and focus on students who think physical therapy is a possible career option.  Topics included will range from why physical therapy as a career, what it is like to be a physical therapist, and current job outlook.  The presentation will also include specifics about Fresno State’s DPT program including student profiles, curriculum, cost and financial aid, faculty highlights, department facilities, and unique opportunities for Fresno State DPT students such as research and on-campus clinics.

Suggested Audience

Anyone who is interested in Physical Therapy as a career and the program at Fresno State.

  • Sessions will be in the Physical Therapy and Intercollegiate Athletics Building (PTIA) Room 109, located at California State University, Fresno, 5315 N. Campus Drive, Fresno, CA 93740-8019, on the following dates and times.
  • Short term parking is available at parking meters or you can also buy a $3 permit for the day and park in any student lot.  See attached map for location of the PTIA building and the closest parking lots/parking permit dispensers.  The Department of Physical Therapy is not responsible for any parking violations and/or fees that may occur.  

(2) Individual Pre-Physical Therapy Advising Sessions are conducted by Physical Therapy Department faculty and are scheduled by appointment only.

(3) Group Application Advising Sessions with Q&A (In Person or Virtual Access) are for 1 hour in length and are geared towards prospective students who are applying to the current application cycle for the Fresno State DPT Program.  Attendance is available in-person or via virtual access.  A short presentation will be provided by the Admissions Coordinator, with most of the time available for student questions.  The presentation will cover the application process, prerequisite courses, deadlines, and evaluation criteria. Individual application status information is not available at these sessions.  You are required to participate in a group advising session prior to scheduling a one-on-one appointment with the Admissions Coordinator.  If you have a general inquiry or would like to learn more about the admission requirements for the Fresno State DPT program, please participate in these sessions prior to calling the department or sending an email as other students could benefit from your questions and vice versa.  These sessions are not recorded but we do track who attends for data collection purposes and ask that you complete a brief poll after the meeting.

The Admissions Coordinator anticipates having weekly meetings up to the Application Deadline; October 3rd, 2016 with a focus on students applying for the current application cycle.  The schedule is anticipated to resume in January 2017 with monthly meetings, depending on interest and availability.

(4) Individual Application Advising Appointments (In Person or Virtual) are for prospective students whose questions could not be answered through the group format.

By appointment only, after participating in a group advising session. Your appointment is not confirmed until you receive an email confirmation from the Admissions Coordinator.  

You will asked for the following information in the survey. 

  • First and Last Name
  • Contact telephone number
  • Contact email address
  • Date you participated in a group advising session
  • Have you downloaded and completed the DPT Prerequisite Worksheet to review with the Admissions Coordinator?
  • Indicate the days and times you would like to schedule an appointment. 
  • Baccalaureate degree major and from which college/university degree was earned
  • Are you applying for Fall 2017 enrollment consideration?
  • Have you completed all the required prerequisites?
  • Have you volunteered and/or worked in a physical therapy setting?
  • Do you have a copy of your unofficial transcripts?

Pre-physical therapy students at Fresno State are encouraged to attend an advising session in the Physical Therapy Department after they seek advising at the College of Health and Human Services Advising (ACDC) advising office in McLane Hall Room 194.

Office hours during the academic year for the Admissions Coordinator are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and Friday between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m.  These hours are subject to change depending on student and department needs.
