Architect Robert Nicol pledges $2 million to advance Deaf Studies

The gift will benefit The Silent Garden, a project to cultivate communication for the deaf and hard of hearing community of Central California.

The Robert Duncan Nicol Endowed Chair in the Silent Garden will bring experts from across the nation to teach at Fresno State and conduct outreach with the community. A new guest lecturer will be invited each year to teach and provide free workshops, seminars and counseling services for teachers, parents and professionals. Read more on

Social Work Education Professor receives 2009 - 2010 Provost's Award for teaching

Dr. John Franz, a professor in the Department of Social Work Education was awarded the 2009-10 Provost's Award for Excellence in Teaching. This award is the top teaching honor at California State University, Fresno.

Nursing Department gets $1 million bequest

The College of Health and Human Services has received its largest single gift to date: a $1,027,922 million bequest from the estate of alumnus Air Force Col. Edwin J. Cook to provide scholarships for nursing students.

Dr. Jody Hironaka-Juteau appointed as new Associate Dean for the College of Health and Human Services

(December 16, 2009) Dr. Jody Hironaka-Juteau has agreed to serve as the Associate Dean for the College of Health and Human Services.  She will begin her appointment on January 5th. Dr. Hironaka-Juteau has served as the chair of the Department of Recreation Admininistration since 2007.  For the spring 2010 semester, Dr. Hironaka-Juteau will continue her role as chair in the Department of Recreation Administration. Dr. Hironaka-Juteau  attended the Institute for Women in Higher Education offered by HERS and the Harvard Graduate School of Education Management Development Program.  She is also an alum of the Leadership Fresno Program.  She has served in the Academic Senate, the President's Committee on Disabilities, the University Budget Committee and the Gender Equity Task Force as well as on numerous other campus committees.  She currently serves as the Chair of the Chairs group on campus.  She is recognized for her expertise and experience in the areas of prejudice reduction, diversity training and collaboration. 


Dr. Andrew Hoff named Dean of the College of Health and Human Services

(May 6, 2009) Dr. Hoff is a graduate of Fresno State where he earned undergraduate and graduate degrees.  He completed his Ph.D. in Recreation and Leisure at the University of Utah in 1989.  Prior to earning his graduate degrees, Dr. Hoff served as City Manager of Mendota.  He has served on numerous committees at the University including the General Education Committee, Facilities and Campus Environment Liaison Committee, Global and Continuing Education, Employee Assistance Committee, Academic Policy and Planning, Gender Equity Task Force, IETCC, and the Academic Senate.  He was responsible for initiating the University Life + Work + Links Program and was program coordinator for six years in Recreation Administration and Leisure Studies before becoming Associate Dean in the college in 1999. He served as the Interim Dean of the College of Engineering during the college revitalization from 2005-2007.

The institute is dedicated to improving the well-being and quality of life for central San Joaquin Valley children, youth and their families.




Dr. Scott Sailor joins national athletic trainers board

Dr. Scott Sailor(June 6, 2008) - Dr. Scott Sailor, assistant professor of kinesiology at California State University, Fresno, has been chosen to serve on the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) board of directors.
