Department of Kinesiology

General Kinesiology Graduate Program

The General Kinesiology program is designed for students with broad interests in Kinesiology.  For example, many of our current and former students in General Kinesiology have overlapping interests in Exercise Science, Sport Administration, and/or Sport Psychology.

A popular Option for high school and prospective college students, the General Kinesiology Option allows students the flexibility to take classes from the other three Options (Exercise Science, Sport Administration, and Sport Psychology).  For example, students interested in coaching can take classes in Mental Training or Talent Development (Sport Psychology), Strength Training (Exercise Science), and Sport Revenue (Sport Administration), just to name a few.

Our program is an exceptional value.  Not only is the quality of our program second to none, we're one of the most affordable graduate programs in the United States.  Don't add $20,000 - $30,000 more to your student loan debt when you can attend a premier program for a fraction of the cost.

Learn about our curriculum

The General Kinesiology curriculum is very flexible. Students can take classes from any of our 3 options to match their background and interest. For example, students can choose from the following courses:Our program consists of 30 credit units.  Unlike 1 year programs designed to rush you through as quickly as possible, in our graduate program you receive 24 months of intensive training.

Course Course Title  Description
KINES 245 Sport Career Development: This course teaches students how to break into the sport industry.  Students undergo a career analysis to determine their current market value and then develop a strategic sport career plan to differentiate themselves from others in the sport industry.  In addition, students learn how to build a personal brand and essential networking skills and will meet a minimum of 50 new sport network contacts in their chosen sport profession.
KINES 241 Sport Leadership In sport you can be just another a worker, a manager, or a sport leader.  Sport Leadership is designed to teach students the difference between these types of positions and how to develop the essential skills to lead, manage, & supervise others in the sport industry.
KINES 246 Sport Revenue The ability to generate revenue is one of the most sought after skills by sport employers.  In Sport Revenue students learn about the various revenue streams of sport organizations, such as sport sales, sponsorships, and fundraising.  By knowing how revenue drives decisions made by sport organizations, students not only will have a better understanding of how and why sport teams operate as they do, they will be better prepared to become a future sport administrator.
KINES 261 Professional Ethics In Professional Ethics students tackle some of the most talked about topics in sport and the most pressing issues they will face as managers and leaders.
KINES 244 Sport Law Sport Law prepares sport managers and leaders for the primary legal issues that they will face during their sport careers and how to develop a risk management plan to minimize those risks.
KINES 231 Research Methods Knowing where to find reliable information and how to report it is critical in the sport workplace; students learn how to do both here.

In addition to these courses, students select two additional elective courses to gain more knowledge in their chosen career area. For example, with the assistance of the Sport Administration Program Coordinator, students can choose a sport internship, and/or classes in Title IX Compliance, business, marketing, finance, etc. No matter what your career goal in sport, you can choose courses that are beneficial to you.

There is no substitute for experience in sport. Our students are allowed to take 2 internships and are encouraged to volunteer for as many other sport experiences as possible. Students are supervised by both Fresno State faculty and an onsite sport organization supervisor.
