University Profile:

Tokiwa University was founded in 1983 with the opening of the College of Human Science, the first institution of higher education offering this discipline in Japan. It followed the successful operation of the Tokiwa secondary and post-secondary schools in meeting the needs of students from Ibaraki and neighboring prefectures. 

Academic Notes:

Tokiwa exchange students can choose from a variety of courses on subjects such as Japanese language and culture in a vibrant academic environment, situated near historic sites, rivers, lake and parks in the city of Mito. It should be noted that one course normally consists of 15 classes, each of which is a 90-minute period. This should be a total of 22.5 hours of instruction per course.

Each exchange student is required to take

1) Either the basic or the intermediate Japanese language course, according to the results of the Japanese Placement Test, and

2) Four of the Japanese affairs and culture courses.

Program Dates:

Semester 1: Early September to Mid January

Housing and Meals:

Students can stay in the Tokiwa International Hall (a university dormitory) during the fall semester (September through January), which consists of an air-conditioned suite which consists of three bedrooms, a shared living room, a shared shower and a toilet. There is a large kitchen and a common room, which every resident can use.

Insurance Requirement:

All Fresno State students studying abroad are required to have the CSU required international travel and health insurance. The cost for the insurance is the responsibility of the student and runs approximately $300 for the semester.

Visa:

U.S. citizens studying in Japan for one semester are required to obtain a student visa prior to arriving in Japan.  Visas can be obtained through the Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco or Los Angeles, depending upon the permanent address of the student.

Application Instructions:

When applying to the Fresno State exchange program to Tokiwa, students can expect to complete two applications; one for Fresno state, the other for Tokiwa.

Fresno State Application (due on or before the application deadline):

  • Study Abroad Application Packet
  • 500 word paper entitled “My readiness to study in Japan (my past, present and future)”
  • Copy of passport
  • Official transcripts from all colleges

Tokiwa Application:

Students will receive the Tokiwa application by e-mail after their Fresno State application has been reviewed for eligibility requirements. As part of the Tokiwa application, students will be required to get a Certificate of Health which must be signed by a medical professional.
