Critical Literacy

This course is designed to help teachers in K-12 classrooms understand children’s literature in profound ways with the aid of writing for drama, the visual arts and music. There is a focus not only on children’s literature, but also on critical comprehension. What are the authors’ purposes for writing the text? What are alternative perspectives to the ones offered by the author? What kind of work does this text do in the world of ideas? Several experts in the area of children’s literature will help the class analyze the language and genre of children’s texts. We will also focus on alternative ways to respond to the text including the use of pantomime, narrated improvisation, drawing, the filming and editing of video and the creation of song lyrics. Finally a third focus will be on ways in which students can use their analysis and understanding of genre to refine their writing.
