Social, economic, political, historical, and philosophic components in development of social welfare and social work in western society.

SWRK 122T. Topics in Social Work (1-3; max total 15)
Topics in fields of social work practice, basic social work theories, and social work methods.

SWRK 123. Seminar in Social Welfare Policies and Programs (3)
Basic policies and major programs in contemporary social welfare; consumption, income supports, job provision, housing, health, civil rights, consumer advocacy, population control, environmental standards; principles of social security, administration of social services, roles of government and citizen participation.

SWRK 124. Social Welfare Policy Advocacy (1)
A two-day course offered in March of the spring semester in the state capital of Sacramento, California. Provides beginning skill-building in advocacy and political action on current social welfare policy issues. (Formerly SWRK 122T)

SWRK 125. Social Services for the Aging (3)
(Same as GERON 125.)
Students will be acquainted with the common bio-psycho social needs of the aging in the United States and the social services available to meet those needs. Within the context of social work values and problem-solving methods, attention will be given to issues of ethnicity, gender, and gaps in services.

SWRK 128. Child Welfare (3)
History, development, and provision of child welfare services in the United States.

SWRK 129. Treatment of Chemical Dependency (3)
Intervention and treatment of the chemically dependent and of family members; community resources; laboratory skills development.

Introduction to social work intervention.

SWRK 135. Human Behavior and the Social Environment (3)
A general systems approach focused on the interaction of biological, psychological, and cultural phenomena with individuals, small groups, complex organizations, and communities.

SWRK 136. Cultural Diversity and Oppression (3)
Prerequisites: G.E. Foundation and Breadth Area D. Cultural, economic, ethnic, social, and psychological considerations for helping members of groups who suffer oppressed status in heterogeneous society. Required for Cross-Cultural Competency Certificate. G.E. Multicultural/International MI (except Social Work majors)

SWRK 137. Principles in Cross-Cultural Competence (3)
Prerequisite: SWRK 136. Theoretical framework for skill-based cultural competency in educational, business, and public/private human services settings. Problem formulation and interaction skills with diverse populations. Required for Cross-Cultural Competency Certificate.

SWRK 139. Seminar in Macro Practice (3)
Restricted to first semester internship students who must concurrently enroll in SWRK 181. Cannot be taken concurrently with SWRK 140. Must be taken concurrently with SWRK 181. Analysis of and interventive strategies in large groups, organizations, and the community. (Formerly SWRK 141)

SWRK 140. Seminar in Micro Practice (3)
Prerequisite: SWRK 139 and 181. Restricted to second semester internship students who must concurrently enroll in SWRK 182. Seminar emphasizing integration of human behavior and social environment theories with principles of beginning social work counseling techniques with individuals, families, and small groups.

SWRK 152. Introduction to Mediation
and Conflict Resolution for Human Service Professionals (3)

Provides students with a knowledge base in mediation as a method of conflict resolution. Develops beginning level skills in mediating conflicts as part of social work practice. (Formerly SWRK 122T)

SWRK 175. Seminar in Human Services Research (3)
Introduction to social work research and evaluation of social work practice. Focuses on the scientific method, research design, sampling strategies, cultural, gender, and ethical considerations as these relate to social work and social work practice.

SWRK 176. Seminar in Data Analysis and Presentation (3)
Prerequisite: SWRK 175. Introduction to statistical methods with a focus on analysis and interpretation of data. Application of data analysis and statistical methods for the evaluation of social work practice.

SWRK 181. Field Instruction A (6)
(First semeseter field internship.) Prerequisites: senior standing, minimum 2.0 GPA, completion of UDWS requirement, G.E. Foundation and Breadth, and SWRK 20, 123, 130, 135, and 136. Concurrent enrollment in SWRK 139 (formerly 141). Guided social work practice experience with individuals, groups, families, and organizations. Liability insurance required during internships. CR/NC grading only.

SWRK 182. Field Instruction B (6)
(Second semester field internship). Prerequisites: senior standing, minimum 2.0 GPA, SWRK 181, and concurrent enrollment in SWRK 140. Guided social work practice experience with individuals, groups, families, and organizations. Liability insurance required. CR/NC grading only. (Formerly SWRK 181, second semester).

SWRK 185. Senior Capstone Seminar (3)
Concurrent enrollment in SWRK 181 or 182. Prerequisite: senior standing or permission of instructor. Culminating senior seminar integrating theory and practice of social work; current trends in the profession. Satisfies the senior major requirement for the B.A. (Formerly SWRK 181, second semester internship).

SWRK 200. Social Welfare Policy I (3)
Philosophical and historical foundations of the profession of social work and the domain of social welfare. Includes review of major federally sponsored social policies and programs in the United States and the relationship between social problems, and programmatic professional responses.

SWRK 203. Social Welfare Policy II (3)
Prerequisite: SWRK 200. Analysis of social welfare policies and program operations, including the linkage of social, economic, cultural, political, legislative, administrative and legal dimensions. Comparison of various policy analysis frameworks; the legislative process and involvement of social workers therein.

SWRK 214. Human Behavior and Social Environment: Individuals and Families (3)
A bio-psycho-social system's perspective of the transactional context for the adaptive-maladaptive continuum of human behavior throughout the life span.

Theories of small groups, organizational, and community behavior from a social system's perspective.

Concurrent enrollment in SWRK 250 required. Seminar about the development of social work practice, introducing the generalist approach to intervention with individuals, families, small groups, organizations and communities.

SWRK 246. Seminar in Social Work Practice with Formal Organizations (3)
Prerequisite: SWRK 200, 220, and concurrent enrollment in SWRK 250. Theory and practice of the administration of formal social service organizations.

SWRK 247. Seminar in Social Work Practice with Communities (3)
Prerequisite: SWRK 200, 220, 224, 246, and concurrent enrollment in SWRK 250 or 251. Theory and practice of social work intervention with communities.

SWRK 250. Field Instructed Practice (2-3; max total 5)
Prerequisite: permission of field coordinator. Advanced, field-instructed practice experiences in work with individuals, groups, families, formal organizations, and communities; applying the theories and concepts of social work practice. Students are required to carry liability insurance during internships. Approved for RP grading. CR/NC grading only.

SWRK 251. Field Instructed Practice (2-3; max total 5)
Prerequisite: SWRK 250. Continued advanced, field-instructed practice experiences in work with individuals, groups and families, formal organizations, and communities; applying the theories and concepts of social work practice. Students are required to carry liability insurance during internships. Approved for RP grading. CR/NC grading only.

SWRK 271T. Seminar in Social Work Specializations (1-3; max total 9)
In-depth study of specific treatment modalities or methods, e.g., community or ganization, community development, crisis intervention, personality adjustment.

SWRK 272T. Seminar in Areas of Social Work (1-3; max total 9)
Theories and developments in the areas of mental health, public health, administration of justice, child welfare, family welfare, income maintenance, schools, international social work, social gerontology, social rehabilitation.

SWRK 273. Sex Therapy (3)
Prerequisite: permission of instructor. Emphasizes the recent developments in the understanding and identification of sexual disorders and, therefore, the appropriate means for therapeutic intervention. The focus is on commonly experienced sexual problems or disorders, treatment procedures, and evaluation of sexual therapy.

SWRK 274. Advanced Social Work Practice in Schools (3)
Addresses the specific knowledge and skills required for advanced social work practice in school settings. Required for the Pupil Personnel Services credential in school social work and child welfare and attendance services. (Formerly SWRK 271T)

SWRK 275. Advanced Social Work Practice in Schools II (3)
Prerequisite: SWRK 274. Addresses specific target populations, strategies for intervention, and evaluation of advanced social work practice in school settings. Required for the Pupil Personnel Services credential in school social work and child welfare and attendance services. (Formerly SWRK 271T)

SWRK 276. Psychosocial Assessment and Treatment Planning
for Clinical Social Work (3)

Develops competence in clinical assessment. Helps students identify a collaborative treatment plan and understand the part various mental, behavioral, and emotional problems play in assessment and treatment planning in clinical social work practice. (Formerly SWRK 271T)

SWRK 277. Advanced Seminar on Trauma and Abuse (3)
Prerequisite: SWRK 220. Analysis of the effects of trauma and abuse on victims. Historical context of trauma and post-traumatic stress reactions. Effects of trauma and abuse on child and adult development and on individuals and families across cultures and nations. (Formerly SWRK 271T)

SWRK 278. Advanced Child Welfare Practice (3)
Prerequisite: SWRK 128, if less than two years of experience in child welfare setting. Designed to assist students in development of practice skills (assessment, treatment, and intervention planning) in work with children and families involved within the child welfare system. Required for Title IV-E Child Welfare Program students. (Formerly SWRK 271T)

SWRK 291. Advanced Social Work Research (3)
Prerequisite: prior statistics course. Strategies for advanced social work research methodology and analysis.

SWRK 292. Seminar in Thesis/Project (3)
Prerequisite: SWRK 291 and advancement to candidacy. Develops and implements thesis or project research that adds to social work practice and knowledge. (Formerly SWRK 272T)

SWRK 298. Project (2)
Prerequisite: SWRK 291 and 292. See Criteria for Thesis and Project. A project must evidence originality and independent thinking, appropriate form and organization, and a rationale. It must be described and summarized in a written abstract that includes the project's significance, objectives, methodology, and a conclusion or recommen-dation. Approved for RP grading.

SWRK 299. Thesis (3)
Prerequisite: SWRK 291 and 292. See Criteria for Thesis and Project. Preparation, completion, and submission of an acceptable thesis for the master's degree. Approved for RP grading.
