Tony Mowrer

Dr. Tony Mowrer joined the faculty at California State University, Fresno in 2007 as the choral music education specialist. Dr. Mowrer received his baccalaureate degree in music from Lubbock Christian University in Texas, his Master’s in music history from West Chester University, in Pennsylvania, and his doctorate in music education from Temple University, also in Pennsylvania. His career has spanned 40  years at the high school and college levels with his high school choirs routinely receiving Excellent and Superior ratings in regional festivals and several of his students selected to participate in division and national ACDA Honor Choirs.

At Fresno State Dr. Mowrer has filled a variety of roles in addition to coordinating the Music Education program and teaching classes in that program. Additional courses he has taught include courses in Music Theory, Ear Training, Choral Conducting, and Music History. He has conducted the Men’s and Women’s Choirs as well as the University’s Chamber Singers. That ensemble’s recordings of music by Robert S. Cohen under Dr. Mowrer’s direction include God’s Whisper (World Premier) and The Wind and can be heard at the composer’s website, http://www.robertscohen.com/category/choral-music/works-for-chorus-piano/. In addition to his teaching duties, Dr. Mowrer served as Music Department Chair from August 2012-August 2016.

Dr. Mowrer’s research interests include improvement of ensemble tuning, integration of music into general  education, and advocacy. His research into these subjects has been published in The Choral Journal, California English, and the CMEA Magazine. He is active as a clinician and adjudicator and serves on the Board of Institutional Reviewers for the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. He has served as an examiner for the International Baccalaureate Organization.

Dr. Mowrer is a member of the ACDA, MENC, and FMCMEA, and is currently the Secretary for the CMEA Central Section. He is a member of the Fresno Community Chorus, singing with that organization’s Master Chorale and Coro Piccolo. He is the tenor section leader and member of the Board of the Fresno Community Chorus. He is also the choir director at the Willow Avenue Mennonite Church in Clovis, CA, a position he has held since 2005.
