Fresno State Opera Theatre
The newly named Fresno State Opera Theatre is dedicated to helping the singer-actor explore their potential on the stage. It has attracted local as well as international students to Fresno State. Techniques on acting for singing, stage movement, and becoming a freer, more expressive solo performer are studied. Each semester culminates in staged and costumed performances of standard operatic and musical theater repertoire carefully selected to reflect the vocal, theatrical, and musical level of development for each student. In addition Opera Theatre provides students the opportunity to tour, and for select performances, perform with an orchestra.
In 2009/2010 Opera Theatre presented a scenes program titled “Perfect Endings”, a selection of opera finales, in the Wahlberg Recital Hall. This production toured the South Valley and culminated in a joint performance between our students and the College of the Sequoias voice program. In the spring of 2010 Opera Theatre presented Elixir of Love, a fully staged version of the opera, in the Concert Hall at Fresno State.
In the Fall of 2010, Opera Theatre presented “Opera in the Country” a selection of scenes inspired by rural America. In addition Opera Theatre commissioned Fresno State composer Carlos Gamboa and librettist Sharon Rogers to write and perform an opera titled “Mother Please”.
For the Holiday Season, Fresno State Opera performed Amahl and the Night Visitors, a joint collaboration between the Fresno State Concert Choir and instrumentalists from the area.
In the Spring of 2011 Opera Theatre will perform a scenes program titled “@operascenes2011” a selection of scenes from our favorite operas.
Fresno State Opera Theatre also runs a summer program titled “Summer Sing” for aspiring singers during July.
Opera Theatre is a driving force in opera and music theatre performance in the Valley. It provides the singer-actor with a unique and lasting education in the theatrical and vocal arts.
