Music Education Barrier
As part of the Bachelor of Music Degree in Music Education all students should possess
and be able to demonstrate skills in sight-reading, sight-singing, playing simple
piano accompaniment, and perform at a proficient level on their primary instrument.
As such, students are required to take and pass the Music Ed Barrier prior to the
last semester of the degree. Students are allotted TWO attempts. * In order to pass,
all parts of the Barrier must be passed. The Barrier will be given every semester.
More information on what and how to prepare for the Music Education Barrier can be
found at this link Music Education Barrier Paket
Single Subject Teaching Credential in Music
Upon completion of the Baccalaureate degree in Music, students enter the Teaching
Credential Program to complete appropriate coursework and Student Teaching (34 Units
Total) to receive their Teaching Credential. Specific courses are listed below.
- Applicants must complete two Pre-requisite Courses prior to entering the Credential
Program. Students must take MUS 50 or Equivalent Course. This course is built into the B.M Music Education Option. *Note this is also required to be considered Subject Matter Proficient.
- Students entering the credential program must also take CI 149---Research Based Planning
and Instruction. This course is not a requirement for graduation in the Bachelor degree
but is a pre-requisite for the credential program, meaning it will not count toward the credential but you

Applying to the Teaching Credential Program
Steps to apply
- Complete the application from the Kremen School of Education
- Complete the CBEST (and CSET if necessary)*** It would be wise to complete the CBEST
sometime during your sophomore/junior year! If you must take the CSET, schedule it early during the year before applying to the
credential program. Failure to do so could delay admission to the credential program.
- Attend Kremen School of Education Orientation, if required---several meetings are
held each semester and are published on their website.
- Schedule and Interview with Dr. Emily Mason or Dr. Tony Mowrer. This interview must
be completed before the Kremen School of Education Priority Deadline. *Applicants
who have not completed an Interview will not be considered for admission.
The School of Education will NOT consider/accept incomplete applications, including
completion of the CBEST/CSET/Certificate of Clearance/TB Test/References, etc. Plan in a way that allows you to complete the application in a timely manner.
CBEST
You may have read that the CBEST is no longer required. That is not entirely true.
Basic Skills (Reading, Writing, Math) are still required of ALL CA teachers. The CBEST
is one pathway to showing Basic Skills but it is not the only way. Another path has
opened that includes a B or better in a combination of classes. The specifics are
listed on the application website under Basic Skills.
**If you do not meet the alternate coursework option, take the CBEST!
CSET
You may have read that the CSET is no longer required. As with the CBEST, this is
not entirely true. Single-Subject-Matter-Proficiency is still required of all Single-Subject
teachers (including Music). Assumptions should not be made. Students are still required
to complete the Music Ed program at Fresno State or take the CSET if not completing
a degree in Music Ed. Students not completing a Music Ed degree at Fresno State and
who wish to apply to Fresno State’s Credential program, will be required to take parts
of the Music CSET. If you plan to apply to another Credential Program you may have
to take additional coursework in lieu of the CSET or take the CSET in Music.
Intern Credential Policy
Individuals on a temporary permit (STSP/PIP) will not be accepted as an Intern at Fresno State and they should plan to attend a different
University to complete their credential.
Possible Acceptance
Students may be accepted to the Music Internship in the Single-Subject Credential
Program provided they meet ALL of the following:
- Student has completed a degree/option in Music Education and/or passed the Music CSET
- Student has a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher
- Student is enrolled in the credential program in a traditional manner, i.e. no STSP/PIP.
- Student has completed EHD155A, as well as other typical 1st semester credential courses:
CI 151, CI 152, LEE 157.
- Student has NOTcompleted a semester/year on a STSP/PIP OR, if they have, they left the position in
a positive manner and can provide appropriate documentation.
- Hours completed with a STSP/PIP may not be counted toward a Single-Subject Credential
at Fresno State.
