DQE

Departmental Qualification Exam

The Departmental Qualification Exam (DQE) tests fundamentals of grammar, word usage, punctuation and spelling. Students must pass the DQE before enrolling in any of the department's writing or editing courses — including MCJ 10 and MCJ 102W.

Students must score 70 or higher, out of 100 multiple-choice questions, to pass the DQE. Students are permitted three attempts to pass the exam.

  • One failure — Student is eligible to retake the DQE with no restrictions.
  • Two failures — Student must take an approved language class before retaking the DQE.
  • Three failures — Student CANNOT take the DQE again.

The DQE is administered in two parts. A three-hour workshop reviewing DQE topics will be offered the first day of each session. The workshop will be in a lecture/activity format, with a course packet available for self-study. Then, the one-hour exam will be offered on the second day of each session. A picture ID is required when checking in for the exam.

PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Please pre-register through the Division of Continuing and Global Education, located in ED 130 in the Kremen Education building. This is a non-credit course. Call (559) 278-0333 or visit http://www.csufresno.edu/cge/ for information.
