Subject Matter Program
What is the Subject Matter Program in English?
The Subject Matter Program in English is designed for students who wish to teach English in California middle and high schools, grades 7 through 12.
The State of California requires prospective teachers to establish subject matter competency before they can be granted a Single Subject Credential in English. See requirements for demonstrating Subject Matter Competency in English.
Students who have already attained a Bachelor of Arts and wish to establish subject matter competency in English, but do not want to take any more classes can establish subject matter competency by passing the CSET (California Subject Examination for Teachers) in English.
The Single Subject Credential Program in English is coordinated between the English Department and the Kremen School of Education and Human Development.
