Master of Arts in English
All candidates for the M.A. degree in English must be admitted through University Graduate Admission procedures. Other than submission of a Writing Sample, there is no separate admission procedure specifically for the English Department. The Graduate Coordinator will review Graduate Applications and make recommendations for admission based on transcripts and on submitted writing samples.
Admission to the graduate program assumes preparation equivalent to an undergraduate major in English or a related field in the liberal arts.
Of the 30 units required for completion of the M.A. degree in English, no more than 8 units may be from undergraduate, upper division courses. Undergraduate, upper division courses which do not count towards the English major may not be used for the M.A. degree.
Language Requirement: The Department requires that candidates for the M.A. demonstrate, by examination, a reading knowledge of one foreign language.
It is important to understand University policy on reaching classified standing and advancement to candidacy. Please consult with the Graduate Adviser to ensure you are meeting your requirements.
