MFA in Creative Nonfiction

Students in the Creative Nonfiction focus of the MFA Program at Fresno State have the benefit of working with teachers and writers who offer diverse styles, aesthetics, and interests; faculty who are friends and colleagues; and faculty who care deeply about teaching creative nonfiction.

Students in our workshops and seminars have published essays recently in places like Colorado Review, 9th Letter, Post Road, In the Grove, and others, with two of them garnering Pushcart Prize nominations. Recent and forthcoming visiting nonfiction writers to Fresno include David Shields, Naomi Shihab Nye, Mike Davis, William Vollman, Carol Maso, Eric Blehm, Lee Gutkind, Steve Almond, Michael Steinberg, Paisley Rekdal, Richard Katrovas, and others.

Our students read their work regularly in both on-campus and off-campus venues and enjoy the benefits of a vibrant writing and arts community in Fresno. Creative Nonfiction students also have the opportunity to work as an Editorial Assistant for our literary magazine, The Normal School, where they would work closely with our editors to select nonfiction content for publication in a nationally distributed journal.
