Tiffany Rogers will earn her MA in Communication with a 3.5 GPA. Faculty are unanimous in their belief that she exemplifies those qualities embodied by a student who not only takes her studies seriously but also takes an active role in her own education. Tiffany is one of the strongest thinkers and writers we’ve had in our program, and her dedication to her scholarly development is seen in her participation at professional, academic conferences. She recently presented her research at the Western States Communication Association in Phoenix, AZ. Her contributions to the design of an online version of one of the department’s core courses resulted in a workshop on the pedagogical possibilities of Facebook at the Summer Technology Institute in Fresno, CA. Her scholarship reflects an interest in instructional practices and performances, and in partial completion of her M.A. degree she is working on an analysis of cultural constructions of the female teacher in popular Hollywood films and the implications of these constructions for actual instructors in the classroom. Tiffany’s accomplishments are evidenced in the number of awards she has received from our university including two Provost’s Graduate Scholarships, a Robert and Norma Craig Fellowship, and a Sally Casanova-Pre-Doctoral Scholarship that recognize outstanding students who have the potential for continuing their graduate studies.
Shannon Rowe will graduate with a BA in Communication and currently has a 3.82 GPA. Shannon was the first member of her family to attend college, starting at the College of the Sequoias where she was one of two students selected to speak at their 2007 graduation. Determined to serve as a role model for her own children she has been able to earn high academic honors while balancing significant family responsibilities. Faculty praise her camaraderie and support of fellow classmates. She is a leader classroom in the classroom, provides insightful comments to classroom discussion, encourages others, and is very respectful. Her passion is to earn a masters degree and teach at the community college level. One of her former COS instructors believes she will make an outstanding teacher and she has shown that in her exceptional academic work and empathy for fellow students.
