Deven Cooper is the Director of Debate for the Barking Bulldogs Debate team. He is an active member of the Cross Examination Debate Association (CEDA) and The National Debate Tournament (NDT) Organizations. Under his service the debate team has reached the position of 1st place in the Pacific Region (district 1) and 18th nationally. Additionally, the debate team qualified for the NDT for the first time in the history of the program. The Fresno State Debate Program, the “Barking Bulldogs”, aims to enhance students’ skills in policy construction, argumentation, research, and advocacy. Toward these ends, the program strives to compete at the highest levels of national and regional competition while continuing to exercise an “open door” policy for students with little or no debate experience.
Before his arrival to California State University, Fresno, Director Cooper qualified numerous teams to the NDT and elimination rounds of CEDA. He serves on the Anti-Harassment Committee in the NDT that enforces the new anti-harassment policy for over 200 debate affiliated schools. Currently, he serves on the Journal of Contemporary Argumentation and Debate editorial board. During the Summer he works at numerous high school debate camps in places such as University of Kansas, USC, Chicago, Weber State, and various other camps.
As an undergraduate, Director Cooper competed for Towson University qualifying for the 2008 and 2009 National Debate Tournaments, and won the CEDA national tournament in 2008. Director Cooper and his debate partner were featured in publications through National Public Radio, The Baltimore Sun, and The Philanthropy of George Soros: Building Open Societies.
