Doug Hansen received his BA and MA in art from California State University, Fresno and was awarded the Dean's Graduate Medal in the College of Arts and Humanities in 2001. Hansen's professional career as an illustrator and graphic artist developed during 23 years as a staff artist in the Editorial Art Department of The Fresno Bee newspaper. Most memorable are two published volumes of Fresno Sketchbook that collected hundreds of his pen-and-ink renderings of Fresno. He received the Fresno City and County Historical Society's Historic Preservation Award for that work.
Highlights of his freelance career include Fresno's centennial poster in 1985, and in 1997 Doug collaborated with family members Janice, Keith and Craig Hansen to complete the drawn and painted work entitled TheSan Joaquin River: Gravity and Light installed in the Woodward Park Regional Library, Fresno, CA. In 2000, the Fresno Arts Council directors honored the four artists with the Horizon Award, for contributions to the community through the arts.
Hansen’s watercolor illustrations are featured in two books by local author and farmer David ‘Mas’ Masumoto: Letters to the Valley, published by Heyday Books in 2004, and Heirlooms: Letters from a Peach Farmer which was published in 2007.
In spring 2009, Heyday published Mother Goose in California, a children’s ABC book created and illustrated by Hansen. Aesop in California, also written and illustrated by Hansen, is scheduled for spring 2013.
