Doug Hansen received his BA and MA in art from California State University,
Fresno and was awarded the Dean's Graduate Medal in the College of Arts
and Humanities.
Hansen's professional career as an illustrator and graphic artist developed during
23 years as a staff artist in the Editorial Art Department of The
Fresno Bee newspaper. Most memorable are thoughtful, interpretive, color illustrations in
the Bee's Vision section and two published volumes of Fresno
Sketchbook which
collected hundreds of his pen-and-ink renderings of Fresno. He received the Fresno
City and County Historical Society's Historic Preservation Award for that work.
Highlights of his freelance career include medal designs for Fresno State. Fresno's centennial poster in 1985, and art for a billboard prop used in the movie I Love Trouble.
In 1997 the Fresno Art Museum exhibited a 128-foot mural entitled The San Joaquin River: Gravity and Light. Doug collaborated with family members Janice, Keith and Craig Hansen to complete the drawn and painted work. In 2000, the Fresno Arts Council directors honored the four artists with the Horizon Award, for contributions to the community through the arts.
