FSAA Wins CASE VII Bronze Award of Excellence
CASE (Council for Advancement and Support of Education), District VII, has selected the Fresno State Alumni Association’s “Grad-in-a-Box” as the Bronze winner of its annual Awards of Excellence.
Featured at Fresno State’s 101st Commencement honoring the Class of 2012, “Grad-in-a-Box” was a small, handled, custom-designed keepsake box. When opened, “Grad-in-a-Box” has a sound chip that plays an orchestral version of “Pomp and Circumstance.”
Produced by the Fresno-based company, Fan In A Box, owned and operated by Tim Leary, its graduation boxes are now being used at other similar institutions nationwide.

Dr. Susan Elrod has been named Fresno State’s new dean of the College of Science and Mathematics. She is the former executive director of Project Kaleidoscope at the Association of American Colleges and Universities and was a professor of Biological Sciences at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Elrod will head the seven-department college with a current enrollment of 3,436 students and 162 faculty members.

Laurie A. Avedisian (2001) has been promoted to partner at Lozano Smith and also commenced her role as president of the Fresno County Bar Association.
Kristen Beasley (1990, ’93) has co-authored “From Privilege to PRIDE: Love is the road” with Candi Hood (Alumna). The humorous and heart-wrenching story illustrates the difficulties of blending two families with six children, plus the added complication of living openly as lesbian partners and parents.

Sara Frauenheim (2009) has been named the associate director of the California Grape & Tree Fruit League. It is a public policy organization that advocates on behalf of California’s fresh grape, tree fruit and berry growers, packers and shippers.
Allison Frost (1992) and Scott Trahan were married on May 27, 2012 in Portland, Ore., where they make their home. The flower girl was 3-year-old Francesca Frost Trahan, and the ring bearer was her 18 month old brother, Blaize Frost Trahan.
Susan Good (1975) and Carole Laval(1971) are featured in the month of January with the 2013 Fresno County Democratic Women’s Club calendar.
Kari Hammerstrom (1997) has been selected as one of six women to be recognized at the 2013 Common Threads luncheon, to be held at Fresno State on April 11th. She lives in Kingsburg, a small town south of Fresno in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley. Hammerstrom and her family raise canning peaches and fresh sugar plums. She’s a faculty member at Reedley College in the Ag & Natural Resources Department.
Rebecca Hellwig (2009) is the communications manager for the Greater Fresno Area Chamber of Commerce. Since 1885, the Chamber has promoted business and enhanced the economic and cultural well-being of Fresno County residents.
John E. Horstmann (1958) has been selected as the 2013 Leon S. Peters award recipient. The annual award is presented by the Fresno Chamber of Commerce to honor a local businessperson for leadership and community service. In 2007, Horstmann was presented the Outstanding Alumnus Award by the Fresno State Alumni Association on behalf of the Craig School of Business.
Gary Hunt (1988) has been promoted to the rank of lieutenant with the Sheriff’s Department of Tulare County. He began his career with the department as a trainee in December of 1989 stationed at the Bob Wiley Detention Facility.
Upkar Kaur (2011) and Raj Singh Badhesha(2005) were married on Nov. 10, 2012 in Fresno, Calif. He serves on the board of directors of the Fresno State Alumni Association; and as a student was enrolled in the Smittcamp Family Honors College.
Chris Marklund (2007) has been named legislative director for U.S. Representative David Valadao (Calif. -21st District). For the past five years, he has served the people of California’s 44th District with Congressman Ken Calvert. As a student, he was a member of the Smittcamp Family Honors College.
Dave Milutinovich (1969) has been named the new general manager of The Downtown Club, a private club that’s been located in downtown Fresno for 50 years. He and his wife, Karyn, own the well-known Manhattan Steakhouse & Bar.
Tracy Edwards Newel (2011) has recently relocated to New York City to work in client services for Subco. She successfully spearheaded Fresno State’s Centennial Celebration activities in 2010-11.
Kounthida “Teda” Phadoughxath (2009) is working for Estee Lauder in New York City, following a successful internship with Tiffany & Co. A native of Thailand, she recently visited campus and spoke to “The Collegian” student newspaper. More →
Jerry Tarkanian (1955), known as “Tark the Shark,” was featured in the article, “A Rebel’s Methods Go Mainstream,” published in “The New York Times” on Jan. 3, 2013. With one of the most wins of any basketball coach in the NCAA, he was Fresno State’s head coach from 1995 to 2002. More →
Gabriel Trevino (2001) produced a video that’s been selected as a finalist in the Dorito’s 2013 Crash the Super Bowl Contest. If Trevino’s video wins, it will air during the Super Bowl.

James R. Wilson (1961, 76) was recognized for his support by the San Francisco Jazz Center by engraving his name on the wall of glass for the Grand Opening of the SF Jazz Center facility in January, 2013. He is a professor emeritus with the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism and taught at Fresno State from 1983 to 2009. Wilson also served as general manager and faculty adviser for the campus radio station, KFSR 90.7FM, for 23 years. KFSR →
Jill Wyman (2001) has been named the director of government affairs and executive assistant to the senior vice president at the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America, an insurance trade association on Capitol Hill. For the past seven years, she was the legislative manager in the Government Relations Office at Aeroflex.
