Google Migration FAQs
What’s the deal? Gmail and Google Calendar have been selected as Fresno State's new email and calendar collaboration suite scheduled to replace Zimbra this academic year.
Why? Google is the tool that most incoming Fresno State students use and will allow for a more efficient and timely collaboration with them. This aligns with our university mission to boldly educate and empower students for success. It’s all about the students!
How was the decision made? A large committee was formed with both faculty and staff representatives from across the campus, charged to evaluate the best possible options. The team used a variety of methods to obtain input including: campus forums, surveys, outside opinions, and conversations with other campuses.
When? We must be completely migrated from Zimbra by June 30, 2017. March 27, 2017, has been selected as our Google go-live date for the campus. This date was selected for variety of reasons based upon the recommendations and experience of our Appirio consultants.
What will be migrated?
- Mail - All Zimbra email will be migrated to Gmail.
- Calendar- 7 years of your historical calendar events, and all future events will be migrated. Calendar events will not show up all at once. January 1, 2015 to present day will populate first, followed by older events.
- Contacts - All personal contacts stored in Zimbra will be migrated. This will include Contact Groups.
- Global Address List - A global address list has been successfully implemented and will be available to all
staff, faculty and administrator accounts on March 27, 2017.
What will not be migrated?
- Trash – Your Zimbra trash will not be migrating over to Gmail.
Will BOX still be available for use? Yes. There are no plans to retire BOX at this time.
How do I install Google Mail and Calender on my phone? Visit our Google Training Resources page here to learn how.
Email and calendar backup: Until we are confident everything is migrated, we are planning to keep Zimbra accounts available in read-only mode. Zimbra will be available in view only mode until June 30, 2017.
How will I receive updates? “Go Google” has been selected by the committee as the name of this project. As new information becomes available you’ll receive email messages titled, “Go Google” from Orlando Leon our Chief Information Officer (CIO). These communications are designed to keep you informed on the migration progress, training opportunities, and general updates.
Will I receive training? Our plan is to offer various forms of training. For employees whose duties include managing complex calendars and those that have specialized emailing needs we will host on-site, hands-on training sessions. For others, there will be web based classes and tutorials made available. We will also prepare the Help Desk staff to assist you.
