Bereavement/Funeral Leave

All collective bargaining agreements provide for paid bereavement/funeral leave in the event of death in the immediate family, significantly close relative, or significantly close person. Please refer to the table below for additional references. For the definition of immediate family member and significantly close relative, see appropriate collective bargaining agreement.

When to use Paid Bereavement/Funeral Leave?

Use this paid leave when the death of the individual is "immediate family, significantly close relative", etc as defined by the employee's Collective Bargaining Unit.

When to use Sick Leave - Bereavement?

Sick Leave - Bereavement applies if an employee is so incapacitated due to the death of an individual that he/she cannot return to work. This type of leave is mutually exclusive from paid funeral leave and comes out of the sick leave balance. This type of leave should be used for time beyond what is allotted per the CBA for Paid Funeral Leave. This type of leave can also be used for deaths of persons not covered by Paid Funeral Leave.
