Leave Programs

Generally, full-time or part-time Faculty, Staff and Administrators (MPP) may be granted full or partial leaves of absence with and without pay depending on the circumstances and duration of the leave request. Eligibility guidelines are subject to appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs), specific policies, applicable legal agreements, and current state and federal legislation. There are several types of leave of absences that may be granted to employees depending on the circumstances of the leave and the appropriate collective bargaining unit of the employee.


Faculty, Staff and Administrators (MPP) who are in need of an extended leave from the university should review the types of leave programs available below:

Medical Leave of Absence for Self or Eligible Family Members

  • California State University Family Medical Leave (CSU FML) Program

    • The CSU FML Policy has been updated to include the requirement that eligible employees (identified below), must have been employed at least one academic year or 12 months and must actually have worked 1,250 hours effective July 1, 2019 (unless specified otherwise below).
    • Employee groups subject to the 1,250 hour eligibility requirement:

      • Non-represented (Confidential and MPP)
      • Student employees
      • Bargaining Unit 10 (IOUE), effective January 31, 2019
      • Unit 1 (UAPD) effective May 15, 2018
      • All other full-time and part-time employees not listed in the employee groups above employed for at least one academic year or 12 months preceding the request for CSU FML are exempt from the 1,50 hour eligibility requirement pursuant to their respective collective bargaining agreements. 
  • NonIndustrial Disability Insurance (NDI) Program
  • Catastrophic Leave Donation Program
  • Parental Leave - Maternity/Paternity/Adoption Leave
  • Long Term Disability (LTD) Leave (Income replacement plan for Unit 1, 3, 4, MPP and Confidential)
