Writing Centers or Programs

Library Reference Desk

The Library Reference Desk helps students and faculty take full advantage of all the resources the library has to offer. Teachers may schedule their classes for specialized tutorials on how to conduct research, including instruction on how to use the library databases, how to check out books, and how to cite sources. Additionally, students may schedule one-on-one meetings with a trained librarian for any research related need.

 The Writing Center

The Writing Center offers a variety of services to all Fresno State students who are interested in improving their writing, including group, one-on-one, and online tutorials. Trained tutors will help students with any part of the writing process, from generating ideas and revising drafts to identifying grammatical and stylistic errors.

 The Learning Center

The Learning Center prepares all currently enrolled students to revise their papers. Collaborative feedback is given by trained tutors using the reinforcement and application of writing concepts. Tutors will help students on thesis statements, grammar, mechanics, and organization as a way to help students with the revision process.

Business 105 Writing Lab

The Business 105 Writing Lab has been suspended until further notice. Business students or teachers interested in supplemental writing instruction should contact the Writing Center.

The School of Business currently offers drop-in writing assistance to students taking BA 105W Business Communication through the BA 105W Writing Lab.  The instructor, Deborah Hart, will assist students at any stage of the writing process for a given BA 105W assignment.  She will answer questions, read and respond to drafts, discuss plans for research or assist with research, review assignment instructions, make formatting suggestions and so on.  Although the lab does not offer editing of assignments, she will discuss one or two examples of errors in grammar or mechanics per paper.

College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) Graduate Writing Assistance Program

Graduate Writing Assistance for the College of Health and Human Services is a program that helps faculty members and administrators find tutors for students enrolled in graduate level courses. The kind of tutoring offered ranges from general assistance with writing (structure, grammar, citations) to discipline specific concerns.

Services Currently Offered:

The Department of Public Health is in the process of creating a Graduate Writing Lab for students enrolled in the MPH program. The service will hire one tutor who will be in charge of helping 18-20 students every semester with a variety of issues, including research, content related questions, and editing.

The Department of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Studies currently has a writing tutor providing services for their students. She works five hours a week.  The tutors name is Sarah Thrasher.

The Department of Social Work Education is in the process of finding a student assistant to provide coaching and mentoring by a graduate student for 10 hours a week in APA style and data analysis for BA and MSW students.

Graduate Writing Studio

The Graduate Writing Studio is designed for graduate students working on projects, theses, or other longer papers as part of a Fresno State course assignment; consultants may also collaborate with students on professional development needs like cover letters for doctoral, employment, or scholarship applications. GWS consultants will meet graduate students at any stage of the writing process to offer practical encouragement and constructive criticism, and to direct students to resources that will help them continue their work independently after the session.

College of Math and Science

A writing program provided by Science and Health Career Services is currently in the works, with an opening planned for the spring 2013 semester. The goal of the program will be to help students from the general population write personal statements.
